@danhon we did some wild shit by bouncing orthogonal frequency-divison multiplexed signals around a room and measuring the echoes

Absolutely wild to me that there is a book called "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" where the censored word seems to imply the author does, in fact, extremely give a fuck especially about their relationship to their publisher and to their book's ability to be carried in stores

@mhoye @b0rk This thread from the internet-history email list has some interesting insight, particularly this post from a guy who has been trying for many years to find cold hard facts about the issue and come up empty.

I love to deplatform* people
*remove them from a social network platform context and place them back into a network of websites

These days my go-to example of "you cannot bet on having access to better technology as time progresses" is "I used to have an app on my phone that could predict the next hour of weather with startling accuracy and that is no longer an option"
(I am talking about Dark Sky)

Psst, hey, journalists who are covering the story of Twitter removing the free tier of its API:
you probably want to talk to me for your article!

@stpaultim @roadriverrail And btw I am not one to shy away from this: I will be implementing quote-posts in Hometown, my Mastodon fork, but I think crucially the way I am going to do it will involve a lot more community input and transparency than basically any fediverse feature to date.
This is why it has taken me years to implement it: the tech hasn't slowed me down, I needed to figure out the right process for introducing and getting feedback

@stpaultim @roadriverrail Whereas I think it sends a pretty good message: users have the power to push back on devs *hard* and you had better incorporate community-driven design processes instead of just coming up with stuff and doing it. Or as the brilliant mcc@mastodon.social said (don't want to spam her):
"Maybe programmer people need to figure out a clearer division in their heads on the difference between experimenting with software and experimenting on people"

@stpaultim @roadriverrail Also my plan is for the way I introduce quote posts to be a (partial, work-in-progress) template for community-driven design of fediverse features going forward.

@stpaultim @roadriverrail I specifically was an informal advisor on Searchtodon (having been internet friends with its creator for about a decade), and I thought it was an interesting project, and I think it was misunderstood, *and* I think it would have been better as something hosted by instance admins where people could fully defederate from servers that use it.

Yes, surveillance capitalism gives us some material things that are useful.
There are also about a billion things we have never even tried out because rich people believe there's no money in it! Maybe some of those things will also be useful and we should try those instead. Just sayin!!!!

I'm confused when devs claim that you can't experiment with software on the fediverse. I have spent the last 5 years of my life building experimental software on the fediverse, and people have been very supportive!
There is a MASSIVE design space for weird ideas that are not just dressed-up surveillance capitalism, but so many devs come here saying "I will try out some dressed-up surveillance capitalism" and then act like their genius design thinking is being stymied when people say "fuck off"

@evan @charlesrandall if you want to make it literally not possible in the UI of a remote server for someone to reply, that is hard
But you're right, you could simply neither advertise replies nor render them to the author - again though that is more like a mute than a permission model (I like it though!). The Twitter model is a permission one

@charlesrandall it's extremely hard to do in an enforceable way, less hard to do in a "respect these technical norms or we block you way". Something I'm thinking about for the longer term for hometown

Whoa, cool blog post summarizing a bunch of available studies on quote tweeting behavior -- research that I was unaware existed!

No silver bullets that will end any debates here but, you know, here's some data at least
