My beloved Electric Objects EO2 digital art frame can no longer connect to my WiFi, and I cannot reconfigure it because the company was sold to Giphy years ago and the app is no longer in the App Store. Has anyone reverse engineered or otherwise devised a hack for this device so that I can keep it working?

Somehow I feel like if anyone on earth knows the answer to this question, it’s probably @darius

@darius what a bummer! The hardware is still so good and the web app for managing it still works fine. I knew that this day would come eventually but I’m still so sad that it did, I loved my rotating art collection ?

@adamconover best thing i can think of would be to do a factory reset after downloading an older version of the app perhaps? android might be easier but you might be able to locate an ispw of the apple one and load it with imazing still? sorry i cant help more if i recall the eo01 was more hackable than the 02

@adamconover Huh. Incredibly little information online about it. But since it seems to be an Android 4.4.2 device, I have hope that there's some way to plug it in via USB (assuming you're using a power & data cable, and not just a power cable) so you can somehow root it or reconfigure the thing. https://www.reddit.com/r/electricobjects/comments/z7wgze/what_version_of_chromium_does_the_e02_run_is_it/

What version of Chromium does the e02 run? Is it exploitable?

@adamconover The EO APK is still available online. You could load it onto an older unlocked android device and try to connect to it with that:

@adamconover In all honesty though it might be time to have a memorial for your beloved art displayer.
GIPHY itself was bought out buy Meta since then and not so long ago was forced to sell it off. I believe the app requires the owning company to maintain the AWS service/ API and all that jazz and since they aren't making money probably won't be motivated to maintain it for 6+ years after end of sales

@adamconover At least some folks have reported being able to configure WiFi on an EO1 via a physically-connected USB mouse and keyboard:

      https://www.reddit.com/r/electricobjects/comments/ra2r3n/how_to_connect_to_wifi_without_the_app/

I don't know if once you have it connected to WiFi it will still have servers to talk to, though.

@adamconover Looks like it's still on Android. Maybe use an Android phone or use an Android emulator like BlueStacks?
