Your original point is correct in that there is lots of place for creative development in the Fediverse and I appreciate folks like you who are doing it and doing it carefully and thoughtfully.
But, I also understand why some developers would be concerned about innovating in the Fediverse.
Virtually anything on the internet can be categorized that way, if one chooses. It's a subjective criteria, which some people are very quick to make a judgement on, without necessarily even looking closely at the actual features or intend of the product.
Yes, some features are much more problematic than others.
If you really believe in consent, then you should be advocating that no one is connected to any server other than the one they signed up for, unless they opt-in.
This argument about consent is fictional. Anyone can create a server on the Fediverse and everyone on the Fediverse is conntected, without their consent.
Bluesky could create a Mastodon server, any commercial entity can create a server and everyone is linked without consent.
The only way to preserve consent on the Fediverse, is to create a server that is not linked to other servers, in which case you don't have to worry about this bridge.
I'm in agreement with your arguments. But, I'm fully against the tone and the aggressiveness of your responses.
It's nice that Mastodon has such nice features to block users such as yourself.
Your account is an opt-out account. No one was asked to consent to your hostility, it's just part of the network, however everyone has the option to block it (opt out).
I expect, I'll be taking advantage of that feature.
It was a good discussion. I think the point about XMPP not having a popular base supporting it, like the Fediverse, also seems very relevent.
It seems that there may be a much larger base of platforms and users that are invested in the long term success of Activity Pub than there ever was in XMPP - as I understand it.
I'm experimenting with Buffer for managing and scheduling my posts to Mastodon. I often like to write posts very late at night and would rather send them in the morning.
I used this before for Twitter. Didn't realize how well it seems to work with Mastodon.
If folks have conerns now. Let's discuss the issue, but I would encourage folks to avoid the name calling and insults.
The #Fediverse will never survive if blocking servers becomes the default every time some drama happens.
If there have been moderation mistakes, they can be fixed. The volunteer administrators need time to process this controversy and change will not happen overnight, nor should it.
For now, I'll hang tight and see how the discussion goes.
Unfortunately, I don't think the #Searchtodon incident will prevent developers from contining to develop search tools. I think it's inevitable.
But, I think that well intentioned developers will be less likely to try and come up with a responsible tools that address community concerns, while others will proceed quietly to do it without community input and/or consideration of the real concerns around search.
In my opinion, #Searchtodon was treated as if it was Surveillance Capitalism because it had the term "search" in it. All indications were that the developer was trying very hard to address the concerns of the community, while also providing a feature that lots of people do want.
I believe that many folks dismissed the idea as Surveillance Capitalism, without really looking at what it was or what the developer was trying to do.
Well, your use of Surveillance Capitalism says something. If some folks don't like a new tool or feature, they label it as Surveillance Capitalism and shame the developers rather than engaging in any kind of constructive dialogue.
It's one thing to say that a community is welcoming to developers. It's another thing to say that we're welcoming to developers, but only if they restrict themselves to ideas and features approved by a small self appointed group of gate keepers.
