@hankg I'm surprised too, but then I remember that I just was young when SNES games where released. Then as I grew older I kept buying video games so adults owning video games isn't foreign to me, but adults owning video games in the 1990s definitely is unfamiliar. -

@clacke @blakeisawolf A while ago I read that this program doesn’t allow companies to write off donations made this way. I don’t blame anyone for suspecting foul play but it is apparently legit in this case. -

@silverwizard I mean, I should have known that my audience is mainly corpo-sceptical luddites in poor health, I'm not sure why I'm surprised nobody's excited about IRL cyberware. -

If commercial cyberware became available, what organ/limb would you be willing to replace by a synthetic counterpart first?

@mttaggart Counter-point: Looking for complexity likely will get you to believe conspiracy theories. To be consistent in the face of, huh, reality, these hypotheses need to be complicated, which is easily mistook for complexity.
Ironically, your simple call to embrace complexity defeats itself. I don't have an equally simple call to replace it with but I have a set guiding principles in order not to fall in the pitfall you described:
- Always be curious, especially of information going against your established opinions.
- Establish how much the information is based off of facts, rather than values. Differing on values is ok, differing on facts is not. This step is tricky because people with no scruples will not hesitate to use the language of facts to disguise propaganda.
- Admit that not knowing everything about something is ok. But there's still a threshold of knowledge needed to get a somewhat accurate picture.
- Always think about the people first. Systems are made out of people, so their well-being is paramount. There are probably more, all of these were established after the fact, I didn't follow a specific philosophy.

@clacke I had a low-key crush on Natalie Portman before I learned she was born the same year as me, at which point I started resenting her for being both smart, talented and pretty, which is unfair to me personally, of course. How am I supposed to build self-esteem when this kind of people roam around? -

@clacke @gemlog “Physical network neutrality”? This is new to me and sounds absolutely bonkers to me. This concept can and should exist for Internet, because no human is directly involved in passing along information, but it just doesn’t apply to physical networks. As soon as labor is involved in the transport, you have to submit to it, or you risk abstracting humans away, with awful dehumanizing consequences. -

I'm super excited about the #Fediverse. I've been online since the 90s, been through most evolution stages of the internet, and it feels like we're changing it once again - and this time in a good way.
Quoting this post anonymously because I don’t want to be the one to burst their newly reformed bubble. However I believe the honeymoon’s almost over with Threads entering the space, regardless of their intentions. They’re just too massive of a player not to shift the power dynamics in their favor.People have long been angry at Gargron for sucking most of the Fediverse attention towards Mastodon through no particular fault of their own, and I believe it’s about to change, and not necessarily for the better.
For fringe projects like #Friendica, it won’t change much though, we never were prominent in the space and Threads’ arrival will not change that. @heluecht ’s willing, we’ll start supporting the new API quirks Threads will inevitably put forth and leave the decision to interact with Threads or not to Friendica administrators and individual users.
