@mischievoustomato 90% of people leave instead of ID, according to internal research (biased but sure.) i can say this matches my own behavior where if i see a face scan prompt or some sketchy discord mod ask for a photo ID i just leave.
@icedquinn how many will leave and come back in the end? That happened with le "omg X is finished everyone is moving to the fediverse" where in the end most people went back to X. Would you really leave and never go back online again?
@phnt@Mamako@mischievoustomato anyway its not about the kids. whenever a politician says anything is to protect kids just kill them immediately thats a fascist.
"oh we need more power we need to spy on more shit its not to progress world ID nobody wants its for MUH KIDS HONEST" meanwhile two arrests no client list.
@icedquinn@Mamako@mischievoustomato Neither even have emoji reactions, which is why when you open a random popular Tweet, half of the replies are like this: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@mischievoustomato@icedquinn I never have had a traditional social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, etc). I only made a fedi account recently. So thinking that you couldn’t exist without social media is kind of strange to me.
@mischievoustomato@phnt internet has become a lifeless machine of advertising agencies of various sizes "dirtying" the internet top to bottom, search results for any subject show this.
I don't use it for anything else than doing my job, browsing Fedi when I'm bored and being subscribed to like 50 channels on Youtube, 95% of which I rarely watch anyway. The self-hosting hobby is what's keeping it alive for me along with few fedifrens.
@icedquinn@Mamako@mischievoustomato >i don't know why bluesky is a success. Because it's just like Twitter before Musk bought it. And that's what people that left Twitter wanted. Fediverse is too different from Twitter even on the most normie Mastodon instances.
@icedquinn@Mamako@mischievoustomato bluesky is having a serious issue where despite new users post volume is down. this post was met with the community crashing out and saying NO CHILD ITS DOING WELL SDKAJLASDJKL:ASDJKL
@mischievoustomato It is not about porn page or whatever but you whole life's privacy.. saw a few of these re marques about porn sites related to Vigilance of State.. They know bout ya porn.
@phnt@mischievoustomato in a short while we'll all be back to talking on irc and modern bbs like the underground of the 80s. Hell, dead internet is one thing but also the splintering effect of nation states making their own laws governing it's use is gonna be a nightmare.
@mischievoustomato It's dead in the meaning that aside from very few small groups there's nothing going on. It's all garbage on R*ddit nobody sane wants to read, 4chan bait posting and whenever you want to search for something technical, you get 150 AI generate slop sites that don't even attempt to answer the question you have. A large portion of the whole network is completely useless.
@scarecrow@phnt those things even if noise do have information. And the information being scattered thru proprietary chat programs is something that makes a good chunk of people (the ones posting the info) happy. Yeah, they love being able to take everything down.
@mischievoustomato@phnt its largely noise now, meaningless noise outweighs information, and now information isnt even being put in accessible places, its being scattered through advertisements and proprietary chat programs
@ins0mniak@phnt@mischievoustomato cloistering is part of the problem of the dead internet, "lets just exchange all our intended to be public information in this private signal chat or discord chats, we dont need man pages or articles "
@ins0mniak@mischievoustomato >looking at you UK Looking at everyone. Every state is doing it now in the west. Soon Japan will have a less fucked version of the Internet than US. At least I didn't see anything about Japan trying to introduce ID verification and alike (probably because they are mostly still stuck in the 90's with computers).
@phnt Have you lived through the early 10's of Youtube, scene girls era and forums era,... I'm not branding it as useless, it _is_ useless.
early 10s and 10s of youtube and a small bit of forums. We can consider the youtube part "useless" in the same way you consider tiktok useless. The forums (which could be called similar to 4chan and reddit) are as useful as both of those. I have gotten good stuff/knowledge from both 4chan's /g/ and reddit.
> $insert_tiktok_clone feeds. Or at what people watch on YouTube. There's nothing interesting going on. It's all slop made to either sell you something or catch your attention for 5 seconds.
@phnt > A large portion of the whole network is completely useless. so the internet has been dead forever? You are just branding stuff you dont like as worthless so it might as well be dead since 2005. It's going on fine.
@mischievoustomato Have you lived through the early 10's of Youtube, scene girls era and forums era,... I'm not branding it as useless, it _is_ useless. Just look at what people mindlessly scroll through on their $insert_tiktok_clone feeds. Or at what people watch on YouTube. There's nothing interesting going on. It's all slop made to either sell you something or catch your attention for 5 seconds.
@mischievoustomato@zer0unplanned same opinion. I use ddg and linux, but i still use google sometimes as well as windows and macos.
they got my info already. as long as i dont have anything synced from my computer to onedrive or google drive im good. what a big hard drive is for anyway
@phnt@mischievoustomato I know, its really strange to look at in modern times, That's how things used to look circa say 1997. You see some sites from that era and its mind blowing to image what they were thinking.
@ins0mniak@mischievoustomato It's a weird time capsule. They also have the mentality of more information in front means better. So every page is just full of text and information to the point it's barely readable or navigable. The minimalism approach to web sites we have for like 2 decades now never materialized there.
@phnt@mischievoustomato It's not a hot take, it's the truth. I barely use the internet for jewtube, fedi, keeping the bare minimum of communication and the 3 online games I play.
Ah, and torrents. That alone represents like 80% of my bandwidth usage :kekw:
@ins0mniak@foxcat@mischievoustomato I have funny plans to do, if that day ever comes to me. But I hope I won't need to deal with them. Worst case, Tor instances are already a thing and now I know how to federate with them. It's not like the UK will ever have the capability to block Tor when even China can't block it completely.
@phnt@foxcat@mischievoustomato Yeah I think you're right. I suspect we'll be the last holdouts however considering most people on here are good with shit like that.
@foxcat@phnt@mischievoustomato Yeah, but then you start getting into the territory of having to have at least some technical skill about things, like obviously trivial to use vpn but I could see the day when they start trying to outlaw those. People can def get around things but its a slope of increasing difficulty once bad precedents set in like that I think.
I actually could care less about sketchy porn sites what scares me is going full on mandatory ID for everything
@ins0mniak@foxcat@mischievoustomato The way they'll deal with Fedi will be interesting. Imagine age verification the moment you click on a spoilered image on Mastosoc.
I know that day is coming, the question is. When will it happen.
I will never give away my passport or any identification to look at porn . for me, its more a want, not a need, but im not a porn addict like some ppl.
Id think its a in the mood kind of thing for most normal ppl
@ins0mniak@foxcat@mischievoustomato My cucked router can't even do port forwarding and it's literally twice as cheap to rent a VPS than to get a publicly routable IP from them.
@ins0mniak@foxcat@mischievoustomato >really its just a pain the ass to stay online lol It's already hard to find a host that won't throw you under the bus the moment you cause the slightest of troubles. And I expect it go get only worse.
@mischievoustomato@phnt if you cannot abstract that from the decline of average post quality on mongol basket weaving forum alone over the last 15 years I can't help but call you a massive newfag
@menherahair@ins0mniak@foxcat@mischievoustomato Nope, the functionality is there supposedly in the "advanced" menu system I have to go through an app, but the moment you log out and log back in to the interface, all settings are gone.
UPnP disabled by default and port forwarding completely broken.
@mischievoustomato@phnt people didn't hyper optimize their silly little videos for maximum audience, attention and spectacle back then. When something went viral it was basically completely random and had some appeal to someone, even it the appeal was it being bad or cringe. It was genuine, expressive and unprofessional
@ins0mniak@foxcat@mischievoustomato That's the thing. They don't :laughing_cirno: I either have their router, or no Internet. Alternatively I could switch to the other two ISPs which suck in their own unique ways.
@foxcat@menherahair@zer0unplanned@ins0mniak@mischievoustomato It's the same simplification trend everybody has been on since Material Design. I don't like most of the looks everything has these days even though I do run a material design theme on my computer (Matcha Manjaro Dark with Qogir Manjaro Dark icons).
But whenever I install some old OS from mid 00's to mid 10's I immediately feel at home. The old icons have so much detail in them. For example look at old OpenOffice icons.
@phnt@fluffytail.org@mischievoustomato@tsundere.love yeah, it's been forever since I stumbled upon a niche community/blog full of useful information on a very specific topic the way I used to in the early 2010s.
For work purposes, besides GitHub it's basically just a library of published papers (if your uni/company pays the ransom).
@mischievoustomato@phnt yeah I was trying to find something you might relate to, anyway 19:45 is the most relevant timestamp (and the most relevant year, ironically enough)
@cjd@phnt@jeff@IceCubeSoup@mischievoustomato they're a very real group of accelerationist pedophiles who make teenagers self harm and shoot up schools and it sounds too absurd to be real but I assure you it's 100% real.
There's receipts of them existing too and members have been charged in federal prison.
> 764 is a decentralized Satanic neo-Nazi transnational sextortion network that is reportedly adjacent to the Order of Nine Angles, a far-right Satanic terrorist network.
I don't know who any of these people are, but Wikipedia certainly knows how to make them sound based.
@jeff@cjd@phnt@IceCubeSoup@mischievoustomato@sendpaws i cant lie to you what i said was speculative ; that all the sadism orgs were all fed ops but you turned it doubly speculative by saying feds made it up by reading it on wikipedia.
these orgs are real, you shouldnt be guilty of being right wing but you absolutely shouldnt think these are based just because you aligned to them somewhat, they vile vile vile subhumans who need to eliminated.
If you're doing something that would get you in trouble, it's often more clever to think up all of the most evil things you can possibly imagine and do ALL of them at the same time. It kind of disarms people from being able to react.
If you're siphoning off cash out of the government coffers, you go to jail. If you're siphoning off cash out of the government coffers WHILE ritually murdering children, and intentionally poisoning the food, medicine, and air, nobody can really accept that it's happening, and the ones who do sound like cranks to everyone else.
I assume this same mechanism works at a smaller scale as well, like if you're creating a shady online club, you should make it as terrifying sounding as you possibly can, so most people just refuse to believe it exists, and anyone trying to write about it sounds like a schitzo.
I have found that when they pull shit like this, what they end up creating is not compliance, but more skilled criminals.
Folks will start home-brewing and distributing executables to get the normies around it. It will be the low-orbit-ion-cannon equivalent of breaching the great talmudic firewall.
In my lifetime, every single time some pig-headed, bloated, full-of-itself government entity has challenged the internet, the internet flat out kicked their ass and turned the goons pushing it into LOLcows in the process.
I am optimistic. I absolute have faith that people like @p and Graf can run circles around the glowies. Hoist the black flag, and lets have some goddamned fun.
@foxcat@phnt@mischievoustomato Oh totally, but that's also where the slope of difficulty comes in. We all know how to do that...the average person not so much.
@ins0mniak@phnt@mischievoustomato VPNs cant be banned anyways its not possible, they can ban all IPs on mullvad etc but then you can just use a VPS and set up ur own wireguard lol
@SilverDeth@ins0mniak@foxcat@mischievoustomato@p@phnt if these kinds of laws start happening everywhere, the internet will be pushed to go back to small self hosted pockets of different fandoms and friendgroups, and the mainstream centralized internet will become powerless and unprofitable without the attention of hundreds of millions of users from the general population. The people who will continue to use the mainstream services through giving their ID will be the sorts of 'normies', as they were called back in the 2000s, who originally thought computers are silly and the internet was complicated, but now they've evolved to open apps, chat on facebook and take photos of themselves to be allowed some other basics like that. For the rest of us, the new frontier won't be 4chan, because thats become too high profile and will certainly be targeted, but instead it will be places like this that will expand and that have plentiful memes to enrich one's soul and not leave him wanting in NPC darkness
