@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper the real, serious market for desktops (including laptops) is probably significantly less than 100 million people in the entire world
what's microsoft gonna do when android tablets replace minimum spec chinkpads and dell latitudes as the fake email job equipment of choice
@deprecated_ii@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper and chromebooks. Though Apple is rumoured to bring back the macbook with an A18 chip. This won't kill chromebooks but it'd be funny if it did
@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper@deprecated_ii > Using stock windows is pure unmitigated pain is it? Most classmates I have run Windows 11 in their gaming laptops or normal laptops and even 1 guy I constantly talk to said that he genuinely likes Windows 11 and is just fine and fast for him (I have genuinely never seen it slow down, and I know he hasnt done any debloating at all). And... he does use Opera GX AND "driver booster for games".
@deprecated_ii@Goalkeeper I think it's a positive development either way. Using stock windows is pure unmitigated pain. Why would someone subject themselves to that when they can hop on a phone and use google docs with no friction?
Best case scenario, windows will pivot back to being more of a cut down business oriented OS geared toward supporting infrastructure rather than a glorified ad network to inject slop into unsuspecting boomer's eyes
@deprecated_ii@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper Smartphones literally were the $99 PC that techbros came up with and failed to implement and it makes a lot of sense.
Unlike the OLPC which was a techbro idea that never went anywhere and was completely out of touch with what the masses wanted, Chinese smartphones were an absolute game changer because they allowed the entire world which couldn't afford an iPhone onto the internet complete with cameras.
At a certain point, you'll notice the focus shifted from $99 gimmicks, to something that people would buy and it didn't come from the techbros who misread the market, but the Chinese bringing costs down. The entire premise of Android Go is literally this: making Android run on the cheapest, shittiest hardware possible to push phones to these countries.
@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper bingo. A lot of people just have phones or phones+tablet. A good chunk too seems to have moved to Apple, while a much smaller chunk trying out linuxx
@Goalkeeper@RustyCrab@deprecated_ii I've only seen like 3 guys that run linux (aside of me) and 1 dual boots with windows (11, i think too). There's also like 2 guys with macbooks.
As a consequence it also allows cellphone data carrier companies to "finance" the hardware so they pretty much have a monopoly and can nickel and dime all their customers to death forever.
That's not counting prepaid phones in America which are locked to a carrier but can be sold cheaper with the intent you'll buy service, and the "unlocked" phones. Overseas carriers are much more lenient on which phones will work; so you can in fact buy some Chinese or used phone somewhere and use it forever.
@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper I really can't see windows ever being good again. maybe if a completely different, independent organization was handed windows 7 and given free rein to mold it from there. microsoft is a rotting, infested corpse
the iran kerfuffle *should* give a pretty big boost to linux worldwide tbh. step 1 of the inevitable balkanization of computing
people make fun of north korea for their janky computer tech but you don't see anyone shutting off their air defenses remotely and decapitating their government
@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper Normal people are weird. I could never let go of a laptop. I would get stuff like a tablet and obviously a phone, but nothing replaces my laptop. Hell I could skip a laptop if I could've gotten a 2in1.
@skylar@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper i never had a desktop and never really found them exciting. I can bring my laptop to a lot of places and does what I want without consuming much power and being portable. Kino tbh. I *will* eventually have a server that'll be beeg and beefy, but my main computer? A laptop.
@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper we don't know exactly what happened with the iranian air defense, except that some technical means (as in, not missiles or bombs) were involved that allowed israel to penetrate the airspace on the first night. NSA leakers have claimed they own iranian networks and it seems that iranian internal security was extremely lax across the board, so they probably do :02_shrug: possibly the air defense was disabled by attacking network infrastructure, not the defense weaponry itself
plus there are the rumors, some confirmed, of indians in the country actively participating in the attacks on the ground. indians don't just export IT workers to america after all
stuxnet *absolutely* involved the use of a bunch of unknown exploits by the NSA and unit 8200. that was ~17 years ago, and microsoft and intel are more tightly coupled with the US and Israeli cyberwar agencies than ever today
it just all adds up to being insane for our "rivals" to stay on tech we can probably compromise at will
@deprecated_ii@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper they use their computers for uni work, which is much more than just the browser. Normal people don't really seem to have issues
@mischievoustomato@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper@deprecated_ii yeah it's total ass i haven't experienced it in at least 10 years but i've heard the complaints but imagine an OS that randomly reboots for updates at the most annoying times, pesters you with moving buttons around and now there's a faggot flag where the weather used to be yesterday, and there's ads in the start menu, and it won't let you use it at all without making a microsoft account. it automatically changes your browser and default pdf viewer and 43 other things to microsoft edge, and it does so repeatedly, in hopes that you'll just give in.
@Goalkeeper@deprecated_ii@mischievoustomato in all seriousness I don't think they would have lost HALF A BILLION USERS if windows was just such a joy to use. It's entrenched and people just put up with it as it gets worse.
@sendpaws@Goalkeeper@mischievoustomato no, people just don't use laptops now but still, half a billion is pretty remarkable. You don't lose that many unless your product has become intolerable.
at this exact moment I have three gateways still in the boxes from when we moved 5 years ago. I don't unpack them because I don't have time to game and it would take more effort for me to fire them up then just use my phone. After all, your phone is a PC with a phone app. They all still have Windows 10 on them. So there's my three that I no longer use for no reason other than , phone.
@sendpaws@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper arent the apple silicon macbooks fine? there were some controversies like the swap issue on 8GB macs that seemed to end up being nothingburgers
The joke is that Macs are expensive and the Intel ones towards the end literally had fried CPUs because they were either not using heatsinks or putting them away from the fan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiCBYAP_Sgg
@deprecated_ii@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper@capt_whitebeard i genuinely dont know if he doesn't have a laptop or what. He just solves stuff on his phone and fuckin posts the screenshots on what we have to send in.
sure, more of a pro that I'll ever be. I am your drive by user with minimalist everything, no shared Tech and no crazy programs. I just don't need it for anything anymore.
@Goalkeeper@RustyCrab except when you need to edit a document, coding, watching movies in a tv screen or doing a streaming live because smartphones are not the enough powerful to make a triple screen sync without delays.
@sendpaws@Goalkeeper@mischievoustomato I had an intel mac book pro and it was the worst laptop I have ever used in my life. Performed worse than cheap pieces of junk for the same loads (sometimes taking 7x longer for the same jobs), the touch bar would glitch out constantly, it would of course maintain 100C during loads of more than 15 seconds or so and it had little pin holes for fans that went
@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper@mischievoustomato The MacBook Air 5,1 I repaired did the same shit until I installed Linux and cranked up the fan daemon to be very aggressive and keep the temps below 73c.
@mischievoustomato@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper They still have board failures but not dead CPUs mostly. Apple was skimping on cooling that other competitors got right and had the CPUs die physically.
Most of the time the issues are the classic "some component went out on the board" or "the SSD that's soldered died".
@RustyCrab you dont hate journalists enough >latest number is 1.4b >some blog post (who gives a fuck???) says "over a billion" just to avoid hard numbers >journalist extrapolates that to an insane 400m loss of users >cites macs supporting 85% of apple at some undefined time (aka pre ipod/itunes era) you dont hate journalists enough
@why I'm willing to give it some credence because A) it is true that most people are shifting to phone use. Literally just go outside to see this B) MS has GENOCIDED windows 10 users and said "hurr durr buy a new PC or stop using windows" so they stopped using windows C) the primary job of upper management is to carefully word things to not scare stockholders (without actually lying). They don't just say shit willy nilly
@why they're not shunning windows. They're just using their phones and don't have a compelling reason to use their PC (or go out and buy a mac). It's a natural drop off, but I think the deterioration of windows into a sluggish ad delivery platform has likely encouraged users to make that transition along the way.
@RustyCrab truth barely exists anymore so just pick whatever makes you happy. they're obscuring the number because they don't want to group together 10 & 11. refer to the steam hardware survey (insane selection bias) to see a solid holdout of w10 users. were talking about half a billion people here, these are normalfags who dont really give a shit about their computing, theyre not going to make some big decision to shun windows just because instagram shows them colorful slime videos
@why you are not understanding what I'm saying at all. They have a laptop and they have a phone. Their phone does everything that they need to do. One day their laptop says "buy a new laptop because this one is going to stop working soon". They say "well guess I wasn't using this anyway". Boom that's a lost user.
@RustyCrab 400 million people is in the "doesnt use adblock, is scared of the settings menu" range. theres no way they give a shit about TPM and the start menu. these people pay $80/mo to watch ads on their tv and have AT&T set up their wifi.
I can see this actually ... or people just continuing to use Win10 beyond the end date without caring. The whole "there's nothing important on muh puter anyway." "I got nothin' to hide" "they track you through yer phone anyway" ..
Also there are a lot of kids who have used free chromebooks through Google's programs to get them into schools (this is super fucked up because those things are loaded with school spyware). But those kids will often go to college and be like "I just need a web browser. All my stuff is in the cloud"
@why and no that's not an exaggeration. If you don't have a TPM, windows literally, actually literally, puts instructions on your screen and links for how to buy a new $1,000 laptop. The average person "scared of the settings menu" is going to see that and go "well fuck this"
@djsumdog@why you're not thinking dumb enough. Microsoft makes it sound like you CANT use windows 10 past the end of life date and gives you instructions on how to "keep using windows" by paying $1,000. You are a digital redneck and all you see is "pay $1,000 to keep using windows" are you going to do that or just use your phone?
@djsumdog@RustyCrab@why I worked with a windows admin that loved their phones. I took a look, it was okay. the problem was 1. they were waaay too late and 2. it's extremely hard to bootstrap an app store, and they tried just giving people free money for apps so pajeets flooded their store with shit
@ankokukishi@RustyCrab@Goalkeeper@deprecated_ii@mischievoustomato i've used up most of my 64GB of RAM and had things repeatedly crash from using up the 24GB of VRAM on my primary GPU but that's because i'm a vtuber with a 3D model that needs to be tracked and animated, then the stream encoded
when im running devuan with 3 browsers open, pidgin, 3 terminal tabs open and freetube appimage running all at once, i run around 5-6 gb of ram. winblows cant run for shit on that low amount of ram
@sun@djsumdog@RustyCrab@why I had multiple Windows phones. I liked them, the visual language Microsoft used in it looked good to me and was pretty efficient for my usage. But as you say, bootstrapping a third app ecosystem was not going to happen.
I replaced it with a Blackberry Passport. Best phone I owned from the "capacitive touchscreen" era, debatably of all time, but I had some Symbian Nokias I really liked too (N95 8Gb, N86 8Mp and E72).
