@Suiseiseki @mischievoustomato @fknretardlol @phnt I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

@thatbrickster @mischievoustomato @fknretardlol @phnt @ins0mniak The kernel, Linux files a CVE for every single bug they find, thus another CVE is not of much note.

The main purpose of CVE's is to embarrass proprietary software companies into fixing bugs - with free software you just submit a fix to the bug and don't waste time filing a CVE.

Again, you have no idea what you are talking about. In fact greg kh infinite retardation when it comes to CVEs makes my life harder every few months when I have to dig through 60 CVEs, 95% of which shouldn't even exist.

At least Red Hat makes life unironically easier unlike Canonical, SUSE and Debian, which make zero attempt to make sense of the Linux CVE mess.

@fknretardlol @mischievoustomato @phnt @ins0mniak @thatbrickster Why do you need to be paid to read and understand my holy comments?

Coding refers to a very specific activity when there's a team and that team draws up a flowchart and the programmers on that team code that flowchart with software.

Generally one would program to write holy GNU packages.

People actually believe that using a computer to do a computation with GNU bash and/or a text editor or whatever or edit a config file is "coding" for some reason.

It can be a real pain in the neck, but if you use good software, updating takes a few hours at most.

Do you really want to be at work till 8PM so that you don't break something someone might be using during normal work hours, or do you go to work on weekend at 10am with co-workers, get payed 30% more by law, leave like on normal work days and go to a pub.

The KGPE-D16 is stable enough for production use if you're ready to power cycle when rebooting once every 40 times and it does support an IPMI runs free software.

It's fine, our servers only POST for 5 minutes, it totally doesn't take like a minute for Linux to recognize all the disks, of course it doesn't take another 10 minutes for all the services to fully start up and it totally doesn't sound like a jet is taking of outside the mostly office filled building. All while everyone is trying to work. There's a reason why maintenance is done either late in the evening or on weekends.

I know that this is basically always bait, but this is the bait I enjoy. I'm kind having fun. You know what could maybe run on those Opterons that wouldn't overload it? A secondary failover for the Active Directory Domain Controller, but Windows might now even run on that anymore. Everything else that we have would completely destroy those CPUs. Not even our CI would run on that.

      @phnt @mischievoustomato @fknretardlol @Suiseiseki @thatbrickster Thankfully I haven't had to do anything like that in years.

There was a period where I was working with Windows server 2012 and yeah....lol

holy... okay, you tolerated even shadier startups than I did.

And our CFO went to prison from a couple of the ones I worked at! CEO as well at one of them, goddam that guy was a douche.

@ins0mniak @mischievoustomato @fknretardlol @Suiseiseki @thatbrickster At least the Windows installer is now completely unattended, but some very smart enterprise software companies still refuse to ship their software in a way that allows it to be sideloaded alongside the normal install workflow. So fun times always ensue after the initial install. Like setting up the company VPN before you can even install anything else :meowUnamused:

      >The best time I had was setting up thin clients
I was contracted once by a school to get rid of their older classroom workstations for students and migrate them to a VMWare Horizon solution along with thin clients. School management specced out a single server and thought that it would be able to handle 60 students connected concurrently. They were very wrong in that assumption. :DD From log in on those shitty thin clients to Windows desktop took like 10 minutes. Another good two minutes for a browser to load. And 15 minutes for their main software used in classes to load. Before you could even start to work on something, half of the class time already passed.

@phnt @mischievoustomato @fknretardlol @Suiseiseki @thatbrickster The best time I had was setting up thin clients and getting either only have of the cables I needed or the completely wrong ones altogether.

@phnt @mischievoustomato @fknretardlol @Suiseiseki @thatbrickster You know its always amazing when they dont bother at least asking someone before they try doing that.

I swear they think a "server" is the end all of such things.

VmWare is a memory hog all on its own let alone for 60 freaking stations lol

@ins0mniak @mischievoustomato @fknretardlol @Suiseiseki @thatbrickster Their server room got "flooded" thrice in winter, because they are in an old building with a shitty roof and their server room (read: Single Windows Server as AD Controller with the VmWare Horizon stupidity, web server, single ESXi host, storage server that to this day runs 15 year old software stack by Novell and is still publicly accessible (lost 1/3 of their data after the last "flood"); ie. meme) was on the top floor, because that was the only place they could get AC installed)

@phnt @mischievoustomato @fknretardlol @Suiseiseki @thatbrickster Something similar happened at my old high school. They had slightly better equipment but that doesn't do you a lot of good when run by idiots. Whole school got hacked ie everything just wiped right? Like full drive deletion, no backups.

The IT guy for the district was seriously on the local news saying it was the Russians or some shit.

Turns out some teacher was using the overhead and had her login credentials open in notepad.... :bidenno:

Some kid just went home, logged in remotely and deleted everything lmfao.

They're solution was "well, we're going with the cloud...we won't have to worry about security and updates anymore because they do all of that for you"

      actual quote.

@ins0mniak @mischievoustomato @fknretardlol @Suiseiseki @thatbrickster I think they did the same and jumped on the Microsoft 365 bandwagon when it was new after the last "flood". IIRC the Novell stack was there for their network-wide auth and since it's still available, the underpayed single guy probably never bothered to switch everything to AD.

Who knows how many malicious friends settled on that Novell (SLES) host. It's a very comfy place after all.

      >Some kid just went home, logged in remotely and deleted everything lmfao.
That kid is now probably a Kali enthusiast.
