@whiteman_@BowsacNoodle I have a genuine question: I've read a commentary a long time ago that essentially said that Laban's deceit toward Jacob was a kind of punishment from God for Jacob's deceit toward Isaac, even though this not stated in the text itself of expounded post-hoc in the Prophets or Apostles. Do you agree with that commentator?
@SuperSnekFriend@whiteman_ Seems it could be. Or it was simply a test of his endurance and suffering for God's sake. He has every chance to cheat or swindle and instead he does not and endures, which shows his character and that he was actually deserving of the blessing. meanwhile Laban is punished greatly.
# Genesis 31 The spotted and striped flock continues to grow and dominate. Laban's sons are pissed because Jacob is basically stealing all of their wealth since every decent animal is born with the criteria that Jacob and Laban agreed would go to Jacob. God tells Jacob it's time to skiddadle and they pack up and get ready. Jacob tells his wives that it's time to go, and they agree after noticing that all of their father's wealth is being transferred to Jacob despite Laban trying to cheat him. They head out via camels, as was the style at the time. Rachel stole their household gods (lol, LMAO) and Laban is big mad after finding out they left three days after the fact. He gathers his party before venturing forth and God shows up in a dream and tells him to be careful not to say anything good or bad to Jacob and not to harm him. That verse is odd to me, so I'm assuming it means "stick to the facts"? Laban then says they should make a covenant and not harm each other further and they both agree, building a pillar of stones and swearing an oath. The next morning, Laban says goodbye to his daughters and grandkids and blesses them and they all depart.
@SuperSnekFriend@BowsacNoodle IDK actually. So I reflected on why Laban made me angry but nowhere did God say he will punish him. But then again God did not punish Joseph's cowardly kike brothers who were good for nothing men.
I believe in this God's main purpose was to protect the lineage and honor his covenant. He showes to Jacob that he will not let any intentional attack on his servants deter them and will bless them regardless of the circumstances.
God also does not protect us from all wickedness to allow us to show the evil one that we serve God out of a pure heart
@SuperSnekFriend@BowsacNoodle Could be. God blessed Jacob and made Laban seethe. Punish I mean like destroy or cast him out. The only direct intervention was warning Laban that God is ready to strike if he tried funny business when Jacob escaped
Genesis 31:35 >And she said to her father, “Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise before you, for the manner of women is with me.” And he searched but did not find the household idols. Is that a bronze age period euphemism? 😳
Jacob is getting closer to him and comes across "angels of God". He finds out Esau is on his way with an army of 400 men to meet him. He splits his party into two so that at least half can escape, even though he was told by God to return to his home. He sends a huge peace offering to Esau of oxen, camels, bulls, and doves, and each come with a message saying "your servant Jacob approaches". Really buttering him up in case he's about to get clobbered. Jacob can't sleep, so he sends his wives and family ahead of him, and God shows up in the flesh and wrestles him all night before eventually touching his hip joint and causing it to wither. Jacob still refuses to let go until he gets a blessing and is blessed with a new name— Israel (prince with God), for he has struggled with God and with men and prevailed. He limps along the next day (literally), continuing towards home and Esau.
@BowsacNoodle Almost certainly - in ESV, the same terminology is used of Sarah in Gen 18.
I never really understood the purpose of the household idols segment. Is this suggesting that Rachel was not as devout as she should have been (tying in with the bit where Jacob is buried with Leah, but Rachel is buried elsewhere)? Is Rachel trying to keep her father from idolatry? Were these symbolic objects representing birthright, pairing with Jacob's relationship with Esau?
@milk@Frondeur Not me. I am not a KJV only, and I'm reading NKJV because I find it reasonably accurate and more clear than ESV on certain things. I prefer Douay-Rheims on certain things because it hits the idioms better.
@Frondeur Ellicott's commentary is golden, as always. It's an idiom — from good to bad. Basically "you guys are okay now, don't screw it up and turn it bad". Especially given this is a warning from God, I think it would've been well received.
@BowsacNoodle I think evil is clear in the septuagint...but the conjunction and preposition are hard to transliterate for me...here is the Orthodox study bible and septuagint greek...
@halberd Ellicott suggested it was more of a spiritual but not religious item used for astrology esque things and that they were mostly used by women (😏). Time is a flat circle and she's such a Pisces.
@HarryNuggets I'm making it much worse than it is. If you know the significance of this moment, it's pretty big. Just ignore that the jews are using the term "Israel" even though they rejected God when he incarnated in the flesh with them..They're imposters whether literally or figuratively.
@HarryNuggets A fair bit of the old testament can be corroborated with secular sources. Much of it also points to Christ, and they reject Him. They reject λόγος (Logos) — word, discourse, or reason. They run from truth every chance they get, and Jesus is The Truth.
@BowsacNoodle Yeah I get that and I know we're not going to agree when it comes to religion but one of my problems has always been that we know for a fact that jews literally lie non stop and yet some people take every word of the Bible as the unchallenged truth how do you deal with this contradiction?
I have a paper HCSB that I've had for decades but since I've gotten into SWORD more NASB is my daily driver. I'm also partial to Green's Modern King James. I found a NKJV module but I don't like how it flows, it is very official and imperial sounding but not a comfortable read. The paper NASB Bibles are kind of redicluous, the scripture is in a small window on each page with a huge border of translation notes.
@halberd@BowsacNoodle Kenneth A. Mathews, a great OT scholar and man of God, in his commentary on the Patriarchs section of Genesis posited that the possession of household gods may have represented legitimacy of inheritance and other economic values, like dowry that Laban defrauded from Jacob and Rachel through the forced marriage to Leah. By stealing the gods, Rachel was taking hold of the title to Laban's property.
Apologies for the cruddy transliterations of NEA words in the screencap. Okular does not render them correctly.
@halberd@BowsacNoodle John Calvin, while certainly not an up-to-date commentator, expounding with the latest and greatest archeological, linguistic, historical, and other data, still has the wisdom to expound well the Word of God. He agrees with your hypothesis that part of this episode is to reveal that not even the Holy Family, just blessed by the Lord directly and visibly, is safe from the terrible and evil sin of idolatry.
Idolatry is always too much with us, and we must always return to true worship of the Lord through only that which the Lord allows, through the Word of God.
You can also say that Rachel, by coveting the idols and the title to Laban's property and stealing the idols, proves Paul's words in Colossians 3 that covetousness is idolatry.
@SuperSnekFriend@halberd@BowsacNoodle "in this case E̸̡͙̜͈͉̼̤͍͌͋̍̈́̇̽̎̃͝ͅl̷̢̡̻̠̼͓͚͍̭͕̖̺͓͖̄̂̀͒̀̏͒͜o̷̘̯̖͕͗̀̑̈́̏̈͜͠h̵̨̢̛̯̯͉̭̼̲͙̗͉͓̿͒̈́̓̂̉̎́̍͒͠ͅi̶̟͓͋̆̇͌́̉͗͆m̶̨̲͕̰͚͎̟̹̝̘̻̻̞̙͇̯͗̂̋̅̌̓ is equivulant to this word"
@branman65@SuperSnekFriend@halberd I plan to continue to make the angels text appear similarly, although I'll tone it down a bit. It's for the lolz, as the kids say.
@BowsacNoodle Corroborated with secular sources......you could say the same about the fictional Holocaust but that's complete bullshit....but like I said I know we're not going to agree on this so have a nice day
@HarryNuggets@BowsacNoodle And by the same people, for more or less the same reason, To gain legitimacy, for example the Exodus despite being questionable to say the least is used as a secular point of pride in isntrael.
@Witch_Hunter_Siegfired@HarryNuggets The Exodus is an interesting one, because you can easily twist it to attack jews for scheming their way into managerial roles and draining the Egyptian nation before finally being punished and eventually being thrown out for being too annoying. I believe The Bible is the word of God, and I find The Old Testament full of enough examples of jews being wicked to validate anti-Semitic beliefs.
@BowsacNoodle@Witch_Hunter_Siegfired@HarryNuggets One of the best reasons I ever heard for the Bible being the word of God is that no people would willingly write a book about themselves that makes them appear in as bad a light as the Bible.
