   John Calvin, while certainly not an up-to-date commentator, expounding with the latest and greatest archeological, linguistic, historical, and other data, still has the wisdom to expound well the Word of God. He agrees with your hypothesis that part of this episode is to reveal that not even the Holy Family, just blessed by the Lord directly and visibly, is safe from the terrible and evil sin of idolatry.
   
   Idolatry is always too much with us, and we must always return to true worship of the Lord through only that which the Lord allows, through the Word of God.
   
   You can also say that Rachel, by coveting the idols and the title to Laban's property and stealing the idols, proves Paul's words in Colossians 3 that covetousness is idolatry.
