I guess we should be concerned with who is in the White House, not that either candidate will be any good but one's policy may affect us more than the other's. But the fact is I'm not concerned so much with who the president is, I'm concerned with whether I'm going to be able to ever live on my own again. I'm also concerned about losing my job and not being able to find another one, and how long will I be able to work because, let's face it, there's no way in hell I'm going to be able to retire.

  @PraxisOfEvil @flux_the_cat You'd be surprised at how impactful a few dollar bucks per month is, especially if you get a 401k match. Always choose Roth 401k AND open a personal Roth IRA (even if it's like $1 is all you can put in) ASAP. If and when you leave a job, you can rollover your Roth 401k and if you've had a Roth open for a few years you can take basis (current value - gains) out without penalty in some situations even if you're under retirement age.

  @flux_the_cat See, that's the thing, my dad's a boomer and I love him but he's always getting on my case about saving for retirement and I assume he doesn't know that you need to have at least 1 million to retire comfortably in the US, me tossing a few shekels into an IRA every month (which I can barely afford to do) isn't going to cut it.

  @BowsacNoodle @flux_the_cat I have a Roth IRA now and I do contribute to it, I'm paying back debt and not spending money on anything that isn't necessary now in an attempt to get my finances under control, but lately I get the sense that it's pointless.

  @BowsacNoodle @PraxisOfEvil @flux_the_cat personally, i wouldn't count on ever seeing a dime of what i put in to a designated retirement account, it goes from real money that you can hold in your hand to imaginary money that you may or may not get in the future.
  sure there's vast tomes of laws and regulations governing how the various types of retirement accounts are run and taxed, but what if they just go and change them, because fuck you that's why?
  the era of a stable financial system in the west where it was reasonable to expect things to stay the same for enough decades that one could plan for retirement has come to an end. if they're willing to a throw a wrench into their own system of global financial control in a hissy fit over the situation in ukraine, they're more than willing to arbitrarily change the rules on retirement accounts in a way where regular folks will never see more than a pittance from them.

I'm not going to pretend it one day won't or that there's no chance that it might not matter in 30 or even 10 years, but I also don't think it's wise to assume it will never happen. Again it's about hedging. If you get a 401k match, put in Roth dollars so you get free regular money (traditional aka not roth).

Most people are in a new one every 3 years anyway. Your 401k is yours when you leave. Rollover to an IRA and you can do whatever the hell you want with it.

If you don't want to be in the market go with a money market fund or stable value fund. No cost to enter. Both are as close to guaranteed as you can get with money markets being made of US government debt (if that defaults your money isn't worth the paper its printed on).

Counter-coin clipping the kikes might be worth it if you make 7 figures or have a ridiculous 401k match but for me with our awful match it'd come out to like 50 bucks a month before whatever fees and penalties the kikes want to shave off the top
