makes you think twice about wasteful packaging and single-use containers because you're gonna be carrying that shit all the way home
inconvenient when it's summer and you gotta stay hydrated somehow but i honestly don't think it's that badHaelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this. -

idk what the attitude is in japan, come to think of that. like, do people just pretend not to see them struggling? what about food banks? are average people or vendors somewhat compassionate and generous?
i've never looked into that but I'd be very curiousSick Sun likes this. -

Japan is well known for its wasteful packaging and single-use containers (for example, individual oranges are sometimes shrink-wrapped) and also some old people try to shame others for eating outdoors - so typically people either eat the food near the seller and dump the packing in the provided bins, or carry the food home and then eat it.

Have you heard of the concept of tap water and a nice glass or metal water bottle that's added microplastic free? -

Cinnamon (cinnamon@mk.absturztau.be)'s status on Friday, 19-Jul-2024 06:17:37 JST Cinnamon @mia@movsw.0x0.st @sun@shitposter.world When I went to Japan, I saw two things there related to this topic:
- There are trash "holes" (actually trash cans) next to every drink vending machine, and those are ubiquitous. It makes sense: they deliver plastic bottles, so they take plastic bottles (with no money reward).
- I only saw one "poor" person (and only one) in the 15 days I was there. And it might even have been the case that he even wasn't poor and had some kind of mental problem that made him not to want to integrate into the society and live on his own (but I don't actually know, it was just my impression).Sick Sun likes this. -

I was in Taito City in Tokyo and most vending machines did not have a bottle recycler bin next to them. One time I had to walk a couple kilometers before I found a bin. A lot of the machines just had bottles piled up next to them, this was the most common place I saw trash on the street in Tokyo. If I am in the USA and there's nowhere to throw away the can I just put it on top of the machine but since I am a guest here I tried to not leave trash on the ground even if other people were doing it...
I have been here about 8 days so far. I wandered around some sketchier areas in Tokyo and saw one homeless person. In Osaka in one sketchy area I was walking down the street and had to be quiet because several homeless people (maybe 8) were dotted down the street, sleeping outside on the ground. This was more homeless than I saw in Europe but admittedly I didn't go to any sketchy places anywhere in Europe. -

Couldn't you just leave an unattended bag, car or something else?
Not sure removing the trashcans really achieves anything besides perhaps limiting the timespan of geofencing they'll want to use.

翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Friday, 19-Jul-2024 21:03:35 JST 翠星石 @lispi314 If you are going away from home for several days and you know the tap water is usually not drinkable, it would be both wise and cheaper to bring several liters of filtered water with you - there is the small, but non-zero possibility that stores will run out of bottled water or be unable to take payment as the credit card machines have stopped working (for now you can pay with cash, but businesses and governments are pushing hard to get rid of cash) and if that happens you will have no clean water unless your brought some.
What you're carrying will get lighter as you drink it too.
I rarely go outside, but I always make sure to bring water with me. -

You're assuming the presence of freely accessible water fountains and/or otherwise hygienic means of refilling a water bottle.
That tends to be a lot less common here, unless you specifically go out of your way to visit college campuses or something similar.
(Before the pandemic the situation was slowly improving, but I'm not sure if that has continued.)
Or are you just suggesting someone carries a few liters of water from home to start with?
