So, of course, I cut my hand on my scythe for the first time while taking photos of it to sell it (we’ve just bought a little shoebox in Bray and – fingers crossed – we’re moving next week… So! Much! To! Do!)
Anyway, so if anyone wants a scythe (a very lovely scythe, I might add, which I’m loathe to part with but we barely have a garden in the new place and I don’t want to scare the neighbours.)

If I was in Ireland instead of Spain I'd definitely have gone for it - they do make lovely scythes, and I am looking for one!

@aral I was using a lovely sickle once on a steep slope and yes, it went straight into the end of my left big toe...silly me wasn't wearing wellies.

@gabek It’s such a lovely instrument (that’s what she said). Seriously, though, once you get into the flow, it’s really something special. And much better for both the grass and the tiny things that live on and under it (not that I have a choice; I can’t use motorised tools any more because four decades of typing and those kinds of vibrations don’t mix well and I’d much rather keep typing for another four decades at least) :)

@RLetot No, sadly, that’s what the landlord did with his moterised one when he was over recently. If I’d cut it with the scythe, it would look much healthier ;)

@blackcoffeerider @gabek Hmm, your back shouldn’t be hurting. Are you bending your knees slightly? I’d also check that the snath is the right height. I also find that stretching verir helps.

I own one and my grandpa taught me how to use them. If the grass is so high that the electric mower won't get through these things are great - but prepare for real backpains from hell...

@RLetot Yep, I have mowed it with the scythe before. I also have a really good mechanical mower that I use sometimes. You can use the scythe with short grass perfectly well but it really shines if it gets a bit unruly or if you’ve let it go to meadow.

@aral but you *could* have done it with a scythe... More precisely: I don't know if it's really possible and efficient to mow that kind of « garden grass » with a scythe. And the investment is quite a bit too high to do it just for testing.
If yes (which you seem to imply), I really have to consider a scythe once our building renovation is finally over... Thanks 🙂
