I wanted to try the default mastodon social instance to get the hang of it - and I know there’s all kind of specific-interest ones like for art, music, tech, games, etc. but does anyone out there have some recommendations for other decent, all-purpose ones?
It does matter. The life cycle of instances is shorter than the ones of known corporate SM sites. Then, you need to move. In contrast to corporate sites, though, you can keep your contacts (almost completely. ) A big plus. Smaller, open instances tend to have a shorter life (debatable.)
Any instance ever blocking Mastodon.social would block a huge part of the #fediverse. Therefore, I would argue that #InstanceBlocking is far less likely to happen. For instance,...
@ctrlxcvz Does it really matter what your home instance is? You can still see and interact with every other instance. That’s the joy of federation. @HistoPol
...there is a #fedi "dark net," where you will probably find a lot of people from #TruthSocial and its ilk. But you will never know about it, unless you have the complete handle, as there is a #fediblock in place against them. Sort of like if they were in "Thunderdome," and the sane part were "beyond. " 😉
Then, if you were, say, a historian, you'd be better off having a specialized instance, as you will quickly meet a lot of like-minded colleagues in your...
@HistoPol@AlliFlowers I’m so thankful for those baked-in quarantines and safe guards. It’s been a pleasant and friendly experience so far. Actually feels like “social” media again. Thank you again.
...local timeline. The same holds true for anyone into posting pornographic materials. Many sites have a rather "Puritan" approach and even a pic of bare female breasts might get you suspended (think of being in #RDS's #Florida 😉). On the other hand, there are many instances that allow porn videos.
There are more things to consider, e.g. the #geolacation of the provider ("collaboration" with national law enforcement, just imagine you had a pregnantunder-age..
And even though not "everyone" is here, interaction is much higher than on most other SM sites and (presently) 14 million global users--well, with how many people can you interact? ;)
@HistoPol@AlliFlowers and the interactions are SO much healthier literally anywhere else that wasn’t centralized corpo controlled - I’ve been loving it and I just wish I doubled down sooner. These last few months have been a real eye opener, and it’s interactions and communities like this - with so much knowledge and eagerness to assist, it’s just been such a pleasant experience all around so far. Thank you again for elaborating on the fediverses!
That's exactly my point: It is VERY important, a basic and strategic decision, a) which instance you use and b) which platform you use (somewhat included in decision a)). #Mastodon is by far the biggest user base/platform in the #fediverse, but not the most versatile, even though you can communicate with mostly everyone, some "formats" will be limited to certain platforms.
In choosing your instance, you ought to give (quite) some thought on what your primary content will be. There is a substitute for almost every corporate social-media platform in the #Fediverse.
(BTW: I was not criticizing your answer, quite the contrary (if you even had that impression, not sure.)
For me, #SM never had that illusion of a "whole picture". The corporate sites always had a certain, biased angle, based on the utility they provided (#Facebook - college girls' desirability, #Instagram - pictures / lifestyle in general, #LinkedIn - business contacts (originally.) -- A rather limited view of...
I gave a standard answer, but let me throw you a curve ball and raise a philosophical question.
#socialmedia creates an illusion we've got used to; the illusion that we can see the whole picture, or even a balanced sample.
If we're in a waiting room and we overhear a conversation and then the participants move into a room where we can no longer follow it, we lose the thread.
Why did #Facebook and #Twitter pretend they give us the whole picture?
Yes, here in the #Fediverse we often lose the thread, are often not even aware of having lost (parts of) a thread, if s.o. choses to limit the reach of his/her reply. (I do that, too, frequently.)
I would disagree that #FB pretended to give the whole picture, but I have not been a user for many years, so...
#Twitter, in fact, was really becoming sort of like a "collective conscience" of the world up to the #ArabSpring, I...
I ought to own up, everything I know about #Facebook is second or third hand. I never joined. So I suppose I shouldn't make assumptions in that direction.
LinkedIn's use has fallen greatly since it was acquired by #microsoft
Commercialization and peddling of services is so rife, that there isn't a week that I am not thinking of cancelling it. The problem is, almost everyone is now there in the biz sphere.
It is still useful to find specialized business expertise, though.
@AlliFlowers it’s also important to point out that different instances have different features.
Just for example, the instance I use has practically no limit on post size and supports quoting of posts, among other additions to the standard Mastodon feature set.
I think the reason is that it was eliminated due to the die-hard communist and racist tendencies of its owners. We had some heated discussions about them in June
"Once you have picked a service, you have to choose an instance for that service, which is much more difficult if you have no idea where to start." YES
However, depending on your general IT-know-how and your prior SM knowledge, just using Mastodon for a start might be the better idea.
(It took me weeks to choose the instance, back in the day...so many factors to consider.)
Lemmy.ml is just an instance, and if you don’t like it, you can join any other instance, like lemmy.world or others and enjoy their content. I like #Lemmy because it’s pretty close to Reddit.
Yeah I never had any use for Twitter because I just couldn’t put up with a website that artificially handcuffs people to limited character lengths. I want people to be typing as much as they need to get their thoughts out.
So that is one of the critical features I was looking for when finding an instance.
@marqle@HistoPol@AlliFlowers@ctrlxcvz Multiple services or multiple instances of one service? Since you need a separate login for each of them, this trial and error approach is a bit too complicated for me.
This is how the discussion started. I will not go into that discussion again. Most of us arrived at the conclusion that we cannot really trust software that was developed by (undisputed) #tankies. (Some people even looked at the code.)
You can find many of the issues in that thread and others in my TL, if you really want to go into detail. As for me, I am waiting for a fork.
