One major hurdle to providing a true successor to Sonic Mania is that Iizuka and Sonic Team wanted to move away from the pixel-art graphics with the next new title in the Classic Sonic series. "When you make a 2D game using pixel art, you kind of end up targeting a very specific core audience," he says. "We wanted to bring this game to as many people as possible and in order to really make it look and feel as appealing to a wider audience, we needed to use the 3D assets to really give it that current look. But we do know that core fans want that old Classic Sonic look, they want that old classic Sonic feel, so we focused on making sure the controls were solid and the look and the feel was really representative of a classic Sonic game."
Whitehead also dashed away one of the big points of speculation among Sonic fans: that Sonic Mania 2 falling through was the result of bad blood between Sega and members of Evening Star. "Contrary to any rumors, we maintain a friendly relationship with Sega and hope fans are pumped to play both games once they release," he says."
Sega with the absolutely retarded decisions again. They had a team that could make stellar 2D Sonic games for, I assume, cheap enough and with most likely high sales, could consult on the series for forever and they just let them go
@Moon The thing is that Sonic actually has nice enough sales. The entire meme of Sonic "never being good" "series being low quality" etc is entirely on Sega for fucking up multiple times in a row. 06 was released unfuckingfinished, buggy as fuck... They literally released a fucking beta. The whole thing is ENTIRELY on them and they just keep making bad decisions after bad decisions and that's just puzzling
Keep in mind that 06 came out after it was shown that Sonic overwhelmingly sold on Gamecube, and then they released some jank shit on Wii and released a big mainline title on the HD consoles only for them to go way over budget most likely and fuck it up and continually fuck it up since then
The Sonic Boom story is also fucking amazing. Game was finished. Oops, we have a contract with Nintendo, guess we'll release it on Wii after all... Oops, the cryengine doesn't work properly on Wii
@coolboymew Sega has been doing this for years. They thought they were just hiring a bunch of internet people and Rom hackers to make a side-game to shut up the old fans while they put their money and marketing on Forces, which they *thought* was the money maker. That "side game" ended up being one of the greatest Sonic games of all time (debatably better then some of the Genesis games it takes from), generated a metric ton of goodwill from fans and critics, and instead of capitalizing on this, they pissed it away like they always do. You can't. Fix. Stupid. :sega:
@coolboymew There are people that just want Sonic and Tails to run fast to the right, beat up Dr. Robotnik, get the chaos emeralds and save the animals There are people that like the dozen or so characters that the Dreamcast games had and whatever weird lore they slapped together on top of the shift to 3D There are even people that embrace the cringe the post-Dreamcast games had It's not one fandom, it's two or three, and you kind of have to choose who you're catering to. The sidescroller fans want a Genesis game. That's it. There's no need to "seek a new audience," just use it to give millennials memberberries and if the games are good, then it will attract others that are curious.
But like @Indigo said, we're talking about Sega, they're fucking retarded
@mrsaturday@Indigo The Adventure games were great, they just had to replicate that but they went after the edgy HD market. No, literally, that's what the "reboot" was for, going after that market lmao
@coolboymew@mrsaturday I would agree, I liked the Adventure games for what they were (I actually think SA1 has aged a lot better then people give it credit for), and I think if they kept with that formula and refined it in interesting ways then they could have really had something there. The problem is they didn't, because they never do, every time they have a chance for redemption they squander it by chasing some new market, or try and re-invent the wheel.
@Indigo@mrsaturday I hate the boost gameplay so much. It basically fell for the meme that Sonic is only about speed instead of speed being because you're good at the game. The Adventure games actually got the platforming aspect. SA2 is one of my fav game of all times due to the 180 emblems and the chao metagame, it makes it a really rare game where getting 100% is fun and it keeps unlocking stuff on the way there
SA1 is jank, but the jank makes it fun. Spindashing into a slope and going super high in the air is fuck as fuck
@coolboymew ultra realistic sonic game, remember Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)? That sold well, didn't it? Hell, make sonic the movie the game except cheap out and not license jim carrey's likeness.
@coolboymew Iizuka can be as satisfied as he wants but the trailers I've seen just don't look fun or interesting. The high framerate 2d art was much more vibrant and easy to follow with the eyes. I also pretty much hate everything about Frontiers. I played it for like 2 minutes and it was like being dipped in garbage juice repeatedly. That music and overall aesthetic can fuck right off.
@coolboymew@olmitch the most i saw for the most part a few level ports like lava shelter, windmill isle from ps2 unleashed and wave ocean for sonic adventure 2, kinda sucks that there just isn't much attention to that game
@lina@olmitch This blows. I just want like an entire new game, the usual 5 missions each. I just want an excuse to get 180 emblems again on a new fresh coat of paint
@coolboymew@olmitch why 180 emblems? why not 360 emblems? more playtime is better, isn't it? as long as most of the emblems are actually level related and not chao garden fuckery
@lina@coolboymew@olmitch It's really SA1 that has a big scene for modding and has some surprisingly good ones. All I know is that I think SA2 has a dreamcast conversion mod (even though SA2 battle is fine).
@Ace66062@coolboymew@olmitch which is really weird if you ask me, i've seen someone actually port sonic adventure 2 levels to adventure 1, but i think the physics in SA1 are too janky to warrant that, SA2 has much better physics i guess its because SADX was out on pc for much longer than SA2
@lina@coolboymew@olmitch It's more the character collision was better in 2 and SA1 has a much higher speed cap which the levels weren't designed around 1's amazing spamdash. Anyway yeah it being on PC longer could be the reason especially since a lot of fans hated DX as a port (even after playing both a 1 conversion and DX I still don't get the big deal besides different textures).
@Ace66062@lina@olmitch that's weird because the very early open beta level design shows that they might have made it around the dash spam and the time trial missions, you really have to dash spam
@Ace66062@coolboymew@olmitch i'd say it's not just character collision, there's just a better sense of control in sa2, i guess in part due to the lower acceleration but i'd say that it's fine even if you mod sonic and shadow to run even faster but yeah, the levels are absolutely not built for what the controls allow in SA1
@Ace66062@lina@olmitch the weird ass physics is exactly why SA1 should never get remade. There were strong rumours that SA1 and 2 were getting remade but got stuck in development hell (chinese dev or some shit) and I can't see SA1 ever working without the fun jankass physics
@lina@coolboymew@olmitch Idk I find the controls way more smooth and feel more freedom to sequence break in SA1 (Pretty hard to do so in Sky Deck) but im probably just biased and like 1 more even though 2 is overall the better game :tanya_ehh:
@coolboymew@lina@olmitch Oh I was talking about the SA2 levels not being designed around spamdash like lina mentioned someone converting those levels to SA1.
@Ace66062@lina@olmitch I was thinking of stuff like twinkle park where to time trial you have to spamdash on the freaking circular roofs things and it's hell
@coolboymew@Ace66062@olmitch truth be told it'd be actually extremely interesting if someone as a remake combined both SA's into continuous one game bonus points if it also includes san andreas because i always find it funny how they have the same abbreviation
@lina@Ace66062@olmitch SA2 could be an interesting remake, but christ, I just want more of it, not the same. SA1... really, having SA2 physics or something would ruin the game IMO
@coolboymew@lina@olmitch Yeah I couldn't see SA1 ever getting remade without completing changing what made it fun in the first place and then theres the dialogue that would be too childish to be replicate in current year. I'm fine with it not getting remade though I just want a new Adventure gameplay game.
@coolboymew@Ace66062@olmitch yea, well i'm not even sure how would we get more levels for it in terms of a remake, it'd require stretching the plot out quite hard, since everything in the base game is pretty much set in stone that you can't just plop new levels between the old ones the best you could do is like this one mod that includes an extended metal harbor https://iv.efi.pw/Eq_yTcXrtT8?t=344
@lina@Ace66062@olmitch if they remake it, I'm expecting the Moon honestly. More bonus shit unlocks. Making the racing minigame more complete, new levels, expanded chao content, etc
@coolboymew@Ace66062@olmitch more or less, this is more of a project to modernize SA2 overall, so outside of metal harbor, the rest are just touched up and more spectacle added versions of the original levels
@Ace66062@coolboymew@olmitch yea, but i think they should release a version that's primarily just the level changes with touched up animations for the characters, i think the HD models and new voices sound too much out of place
06 was released unfuckingfinished, buggy as fuck… They literally released a fucking beta. The whole thing is ENTIRELY on them and they just keep making bad decisions after bad decisions and that’s just puzzling
actually, the beta footage from the e3 before 06’s retail release had extra polish that was missing from the final game. 06 was inexcusably bad in my eyes, but the direction at sega as an overall company that that time was really tough and so I see why it came out the way it did- in spite of the ambition they put into it, they were actively rearranging their entire company to remain financially solvent, helped along by generous loans from someone trying to keep them alive, and because of this total chaos there are a lot of games from this decade we may never get remakes of because sega actually lost the source code for them in this madness (jet set radio future ;-;)
@coolboymew@Ace66062@olmitch as far as i remember, the unlockable alt cars are unlocked by a-ranking all of the levels for the character you want an alt car for, dc dlc only had like the eggrobo and the chao racers i think this is just part of that mod i linked strangely it fits completely
@lina@Ace66062@coolboymew@olmitch wait that's an actual thing? Not a mod or something?! Bruh I remember that this game mode has poor controls, the optimal way of playing this was to drift constantly like an Initial D episode
@Mirage@lina@Ace66062@olmitch yeah, it's not quite a racing game. You drive normally in straight, then press a button to activate drift and then drift IIRC. It's a very peculiar system
