this isn't about beating them or removing them from the fediverse it's about minimizing their destructive impact on us specifically.
-
Embed this notice
I am not going to pretend that Facebook isn't trying to kill/dominate the fediverse if it makes its own thing here, measures will be taken to prevent interaction with it whenever it arrives. if you think peaceful coexistence is possible you are naive.

Except fedi is perfect for Facebook since it’s already full of fags and trannies.

@Moon At this point facebook is just jumping into whatever meme technology they can to stay relevant. We had VR, NFTs, AI, and now this in the span of a year. It's sad
-

Funny that you’re simping for Facebook but you block nostr.

@Tony @p @mint @mrsaturday @meticore I unblocked a few servers. mostly we block overt pedo instances or ones that cause technical problems for the site.
-
Embed this notice
@Tony @meticore @mint @mrsaturday @p I totally admit I can't quantify exactly what facebook will do that is bad (beyond things already happening that you can't do anything about like datamining) but they are so big and so untrustworthy and that I consider action here to be exceptional. Again not set in stone.

My conclusion after being here for awhile, is "freedom of speech" comes with rules.
You have to "behave" in order to have the "privilege" to talk to everyone. At the end of the day, don't be a faggot.
moreso - be a reasonable faggot

@p @Tony @mint @mrsaturday @meticore I think we were a founding free side instance but every server has different tolerances and within a couple months I realized I wanted the people I had more than being as open as absolutely possible. I know a lot of people don't like this but everybody can make their own space with their own specifications so if I'm not being judgmental I hope we can get along.
i thought mint and I were on good terms, I don't wanna be hostile between us. fedi isn't the only important thing in my life but at this point it's very important and I am enjoying meeting my friends afk.

@mint @meticore @Moon @Tony @mrsaturday Well, not really self-proclaimed, like SPC was a years-old GS instance when FSE arrived, and it had a lot of people that had been there before SPC existed. shitposter.club predates mastodon.social, in fact. But like Poast, they have tried to keep things comfy for the people there rather than do what FSE does; most places don't do what FSE does.
Moon is the only good admin now that nepfag is not running a smuglo instance. He doesn't run the place how I'd run it, but that's reasonable. There'd be no reason (besides capacity) to run FSE if someone else was already one exactly the way I would (which is why I'm conscripting a robot to do it).

@meticore @Tony @p @Moon @mrsaturday SPC was never a freeside instance. It's a chatroom of self-proclaimed oldfags.

idk the lore? why is that bad?

>why is that bad?
its rare for a "freeside" fedi instance to defed another unless its poast, but even poast gives a reason
Here we got no reason given and total silence

@Tony @p @Moon @mrsaturday moon fragments the network without sneed and he STILL didnt explain why
-

@Tony @p @mrsaturday fragmenting the network without meta is good

whatever, clew.lol federates with everyone who will federate with us.
I hold no ideological bias. Talk to who you want. That's what clew.lol provides.
-
Embed this notice
@p @Tony @mrsaturday I know that blocking them both does not solve the problem and sounds similar to mastodon freaking out about gab. just saying what we'll be doing to minimize interaction, and acknowledge that meta is not good
-
Embed this notice
idk man, you should let your users decide. Allow them the ability to do their own blocking.
Clew.lol federates with EVERYONE. We have a no block policy. We put the responsibility on each user.
-

@Tony @mrsaturday @Moon I mean if, as in OP, we try to block Facebook.
-

Instance block, keeps their current users isolated from “bad think”
-

@mrsaturday @Moon @Tony Those are indeed valid threats. I don't think instance-blocking them fixes those, either, though.

> from what I can gather, Meta's problem is market size.
The question is what can they do to fedi that instance-blocking them would solve?
-
Embed this notice
@p @Tony @Moon Either use entryists to screw with the protocols Fedi is built on or start screwing with upstream providers to quash instances friendly to badthink. They have a lot of resources to come up with ways to consolidate it under their control.
-

True, well from what I can gather, Meta's problem is market size. There are some 2.5 billion people on Facebook alone, like what more can they do to to GROW?
I think they are going to try to create meta has a virtual hang out place - they are shooting for full virtual immersion.
I hate the idea, but I do think it's what the future holds...

> So if you could just buy as many domains as possible and just start spinning up VPSs, you could start using up available resources.
I think you run out of bandwidth before they run out of space. Instance-blocking them doesn't solve that problem either, though.
-
Embed this notice
Well, I host my instance it it costs about $10/month to do so. So if you could just buy as many domains as possible and just start spinning up VPSs, you could start using up available resources.
I mean it only works if you can throw billions around like FB can. Idk if they are big enough to do that or if that's the move, but thats a way to indefinitely corner the market. It's hard to develop data centers too, so it's not like they can fix the problem quickly. It takes multiple years to get a new data center approved and built.

@Tony @Moon Please elaborate.

@Moon Even Satan gets a lawyer, so...this was alleged about Gab, Eunomia. Eunomia turned out to be nothing and Gab ran away screaming. What threat does Facebook actually pose?
-
Embed this notice
Just resource domination. They can drive price of entry up.
A single user instance can be hosted for like $10/month. If Facebook just creates tons and tons of blank user instances, they could drive up the market price.

No, because troons and pedos like how they can censor ppl and instances so they can circlejerk and live in an online fantasy world.

you don't think nostr will be the same thing?
Why aren't you on standard social media anyway? If you are so moral, why can't you get along on twitter or Facebook like everyone else?
-

Not like you can on fedi. You can use nostr apps on mac lol, esp browser ones.
-

can you not sensor on nostr? idk that much about it to be honest. Other than my MacBook can't support it
You also didnt answer my question - why aren't you on regular social media???
-

What do you mean “have your own data”? Everyone else has your data too.
-

Yah, I saw, I just chose not to mess with it for now. I am saving up for a new fancy Mac. I'll fuck with nostr then.
I prefer to handle my own data. Idk enough about nostr to run my own server. Here I can have my own data.
Why aren't you on normal social media bot? Mmmmmmm?
I need to update my file on you 😎

Why IRis still no load new posts well
-
Embed this notice
That’s incorrect in the US, which is where my sources place you in.
-
Embed this notice
Yes, but I am "legally" responsible for my posts. The way the law works, is that the server hosting the data is ultimately responsible for its contests (as far as I can tell someone correct me if I'm wrong).
Which means, that everything I post (or my users post), I am liable for. Which is why my barometer is "is it legal"

I’m not really interested in digging stuff up about you fatso. Anyway, read about section 230, you seem p clueless about what you’re getting yourself into tbh.
You’re legally responsible for what you post regardless of where you post it btw.

> (or my users post), I am liable for
depends on jurisdiction. in the US generally you aren't liable for user generated content unless you are aware that it exists and is in violation of the law. there has to be a publicly visible way to contact you to report violations tho. I dunno the gory details
anyway such legal details don't matter to your "is it legal" policy since in the end intentionally permitting illegal content would land you in hot water (obviously). I'm just over here ahckchuallying
