Okay, I think I'll just start the new #WritingWonders for this month instead of catching up on last... and as boring as it is, i will take #HeraldPetrel because I hope it sets me into the right headspace for writing Season 2. Perhaps I play again with Siff, since I feel she will be the MC of it.🤔
#WritingWonders Day 13 cont. I like the other acs much better. My MC learns how to be a captain again, an ability he lost after the loss of his wife. And, eventually, he finds he is even able to love again in a romantic sense. And a young woman grows and excells in a task she has picked herself. And, eventually, the armour of another MC, made hard by the way she grew up and her experiences, cracks a little bit. And a hard, sweary professional... ah, well, read the story and you'll know them all.
#WritingWonders Day 14 I'm a sucker for hurt/comfort. So I write it. I like many things/arcs: People finding their way back on the tracks after their life was derailed by fate. Growth arcs in general. People learning to trust and love. The outlaw and odd one finding a group of people who they can feel at home with. A group of people growing together as a team. The group of misfits and good-for-nothings saving the day. The old one who thinks life has nothing to offer anymore finding new purpose.
#WritingWonders Day 11 I hate it. Sometimes, of course, it is necessary.
I have a rule, though:
No red shirts.
If someone dies, no matter how short we knew them, it will leave a mark. Even the crew members we have never see on screen because they died during the explosion that initiates the story are addressed with name and birth dates in Galahad's speech to the crew. And for the crew members who knew them, they are not forgotten.
And, I, as an author, won't let you forget them, either.
Siff: *sneers* "I don't know. How do YOU feel about being sent out into space without a helmet?" *spits in front of your feet, turns around and walks away*
Galahad: *stares after her in shock and awe*
Raffi: "Talk about asking the wrong questions, huh?"
Galahad: *heaves a big sigh*
Raffi: *nudge* "Ah, come on, crisps and a movie in my cabin?"
#WritingWonders Day 13 Not sure... there is one that could count as a corruption arc, but it happened off screen, we see the results, and it is a question if it really IS one, or if we all would have done pretty much the same. If you find out about horrible things and you decide to do something against the horrible things with the means you have - is it corruption? How much violence is still acceptable? IS violence acceptable, ever? Are there circumstances where violence is the only answer?🤔
#WritingWonders Day 10 I struggled with this one. It is a #SciFi story about a lot of things, so it is both funny and sad, bittersweet in some moments, slapstick in others. I think all my stories carry an element of #grief in it, but also, there is much #hope, #love, and #humor.
I just finished my author's section and I think it sums up what my stories are and what they should do.
Raffi *rolls her eyes*: "What have you told her NOW?" Galahad: *stares after Siff* "What?" R: "Oh, no, you did it again, haven't you?" G: "What?" R: "You said something stupid and now your heteroromantic arse is in trouble." G: "Mind your language, Rafaela Luise Sanchez Gomez." R: "Ha! Knew it!" G: "Did not! I just said which place I would avoid. It was today's #WritingWonders question." R: "Uh-oh. And you said Phtat'Grthak?" G: "Yes!" R: "As I said: Uh-oh. You are in trouble, Mister Galahad."
#WritingWonders Day 8 Wedding ceremonies vary from culture to culture and belief system to belief system. Given that Earth has colonized the universe with that uncanny ability to destroy native customs, a lot of wedding celebrations resemble the ones we know with slight deviations. For season 1 funeral rites were much more important than weddings, therefore there is only one mention of a wedding ceremony and we know that Galahad still wears his wedding ring. Let's see for later seasons...
#WritingWonders Day 9 No natural calamities. A lot of calamities happen, of course. Even catastrophes. But calling them "natural" when most of it is due to Earthlings and/or the company's doing? Of course, nature has a tendency to strike back. Especially on the #HeraldPetrel Time and again the crew is stumped by a design that isn't really thought through given the tasks an intergalactic cargo space ship has to do.
#WritingWonders Day 6 Harold Galahad only wants to be called "Harry". He hates his given names. Harold is a joke, ruling an army is not what he wants and he hates guns with a passion. Galahad - when Aretha was still alive he often referred to her as "I have found my Grail already" but since she's dead it has become pure irony to him. He grew fond of Raffi's "Mister Galahad", which is nearly a nickname. He wouldn't mind if his crew gave him a nickname, but they are too distant for that.
Aretha's nickname for Galahad was "Hare" and he called her "Aar".
While at first glance just shortening of their first names it is playing with the German poetic term for eagle, the rabbit being the main prey... and with the English abbreviation used in the insurance sector for Against All Risks... It says a lot about their shared sense of humor.
#WritingWonders Day 7 Siff: "None of your business, get lost!" Galahad:"Phtat'Grthak." S: "How dare you!" G: "What?" S: "Is that an Earthling thing? Dragging out the darkest secrets and presenting them to someone we don't know?" G: "What? I was talking about me. I'd never go there! Civil war and no one knows who is friend and who is enemy anymore." S: "Oh." G: "What?" S: "Nevermind. You!" *scowls at the reader* "Yeah, you with that face! Forget what I said or I'll break your neck." *stomps off*
Trivia: Usually, there is a side character called Peter in my stories. A homage to #PeterCapaldi, they share at least one trait with one of his roles and contribute to the plot in unusual ways. Peter Bergman i.e. has OCD like Randall Brown. In season 1 it is the obvious traits like keeping his console organized, in later seasons I plan to explore more of the hidden ones like intrusive thoughts.
#WritingWonders Day 6 The Herald Petrel is full of nicknames, starting with the ship often been referred to as "floating scrap heap" (which Bergman hates, but that's another story). However, Siff doesn't have one (at least not one anybody would dare say to her face) and wouldn't react especially kind to being called one. There are some names coming up later in the story, but it is more titles describing special relationships. Spoiler territory, also how they are handled.
#WritingWonders Day 4 Siff "Traveling? That's an Earthling thing, isn't it? I tell you something: if you weren't so obsessed with traveling and stuck to that tiny blue spot at the end of the universe where you lot belong, my home planet were still intact. So, leave me alone with traveling! And what do you want, anyway? I am first officer on a cargo space ship. I go everywhere the company needs me to. Is that traveling enough for you? Yeah? Herald! Earthlings..." *turns around and wanders off*
#WritingWonders Day 5 Often the names of my characters are just what they tell me it is. They come and say "I am Siff Braghor" and I am left with that. But sometimes, there are two meanings, the one it has in-universe and another one that we as 21st century readers from Earth can see with our own cultural background. They are, like some movie/series/book references and some codes in-jokes and Easter Eggs that don't contribute to the plot but are funny and/or serve as foreshadowing.
#WritingWonders Day 5 Siff is a good example. In-universe and the commander's culture, a siff is a "cold, sharp gust from the North that comes suddenly out of nowhere and cuts like a knife"
If you know a bit about Norse mythology, you will see different meanings in our universe/culture.
#WritingWonders Day 5 Names are always important in my stories and appear as:
- Someone doesn't like their given name and gets angry if called by it
- some characters will always refer to someone close to their heart as "my wife", "my daughter",... instead of the name, nearly superstitious that saying the name will give the other person power
- changing from calling by rank or last name to first name always holds significance
- getting people's names wrong or not being able to remember them
#WritingWonders Day 1 I'd go to the canteen of the #HeraldPetrel because while after the explosion the meals are restricted, you usually find someone there. That way, I could catch up on the latest status of the ship. And the latest gossip, too. I mean, if I HAVE to be on this nightmare of a ship, I'd rather be informed what's going on. Besides, I would meet my characters, which is exciting. And get a coffee and see if it is really THAT horrible or if Galahad is exaggerating. Art by @fieryzard
