@solarpunk Question for all my #Solarpunk peeps: My library has recently opened recording booths, which I've been using for music (still learning production stuff tho). But I've had another idea: Would there be interest if I started a podcast reading Solarpunk short stories? Like unofficial audio versions of independent stuff that doesn't necessarily have the budget to hire professionals? I also want permission from authors cause I would be trying to make $$ doing it. Suggestions? Thoughts?
@freemo@niclas@aeleoglyphic@Radical_EgoCom My issue with this whole debate is that I was calling out a real problem with the real economic system I am affected by in reality that calls itself capitalism, and you jumped in to defend the hypothetical version of capitalism that can't exist in a pure form so it's irrelevant to my critiques and deflects the point. I want to engage with people about the reality we're facing and discuss potential solutions, not have my energy wasted on pedantry.
@freemo@Radical_EgoCom@aeleoglyphic Does the ideology of Capitalism hold that an individual has the right to withhold access to property they own title to, even if the lack of access results in the death of another person? Yes or no.
@Radical_EgoCom@aeleoglyphic yeah, brings me back to the days when I learned apologetics for young earth creationism. So convinced you're correct that any evidence someone presents to the contrary just doesn't compute. It's the same kind of dogmatic thinking, except instead of "God created earth 6000yrs ago" it's "Capitalism is actually the best system if people just stopped messing it up!". A system for social organization that results in such a massive imbalance is not a good system.
@freemo@Radical_EgoCom you're mischaracterizing capitalism as something that doesn't have inherent flaws. The very fact you keep talking about "healthy capitalism" belies that you know you're talking about a fantasy where all of the problems with capitalism are magically solved. I'm not interested in a system that's only good if everyone does it right. The world has been brought to the brink of destruction under capitalism, it doesn't matter what it's like healthy when it's so easily sickened.
The idea that it's justifiable to let unspeakable suffering within your community continue when you have enough excess (meaning losing it wouldn't affect your overall quality of life) resources to stop it, just because those resources "belong" to you and you shouldn't be expected to give them up unless you get something better in return, is absolutely the most selfish, morally bankrupt and evil foundation for a society that always leads to fascism eventually. #Capitalism
@freemo I wish you the best of luck... It would be cool to see a third party win. If you think it's doable, more power to you. I find it hard to take seriously, but like I said, I'm not telling people how they ought to vote, just that they need to be realistic about what the impact is likely to be. If you're happy with a 7% chance of success, you've clearly put that thought in. I'm a bystander north of the border who's cheering for you not ending your democracy. Again, good luck.
@freemo Biden is flawed, the system is unjust. But at least Biden will remain accountable to the system. Trump has outright stated his intent to end the tenuous democracy you still have.
If the bathroom pipes are leaking, you might have to get shit on you to repair it. If you don't have the ideal replacement you need within reach, you might have to jury-rig it with duct tape until you can acquire one.
Biden isn't ideal, but voting against him is more likely to let Trump have the nuclear codes
@freemo again with the "should" You don't get to decide how other people vote. I'm not telling people how they ought to vote, I'm saying that if you have a realistic understanding of American electoral politics, and you don't want Trump to have another term, Biden is the only realistic way to keep him out of office. Unless you can manifest an overnight epiphany for the average American and the electoral college, spending your vote on a third candidate is just as self-indulgent as not voting
@freemo you misread me. Purity testing is pseudo-religous nonsense. If you think voting based on your individual standards is more effective than voting based on a realistic understanding of the current political situation, you are wrong. Voting is not an individual exercise, it's a societal exercise. Unless you're confident that you can convince enough people to actually get your third party into office, voting third party is an exercise in futility and not much more impactful than not voting.
I think the idea that voting should be done based on an individual's sense of morality or purity of intent instead of on what choice will realistically move society in the direction we want to go is pusdo-religious nonsense. We can't just "should" a better world into existence, we have to use what we have to build what we want and it's going to take time and a healthy dose of pragmatism.
Refusing to vote against a clear fascist candidate because the system is unjust is, in my mind, a bit like holding your breath until the bully stops beating up the unpopular kid. I can appreciate the intent, but it's so hopelessly naive about how these things work and what will have even a little impact, that it's just as likely to encourage the behaviour to continue as not. Don't vote if you can't stand to, but don't pretend it helps anything other than your own sense of self-righteousness.
@ryanhoulihan You're right about that. I had to delete the app... The algorithm is too good, I was losing entire days to the scroll. I genuinely became attached to several people who fit in the same weird niche as me and I'm grateful that I got the chance to know they're out there. But I really couldn't keep myself off there. Yt shorts isn't as addictive BECAUSE the algorithm is so much worse. When I get enough videos in a row that annoy me, it's way easier to convince myself to close it down.
@freemo I disagree that "Queer" has no utility. In your own words: "Then again maybe jsut "non-cis" and "non-straight" might just be more straight forward." That's literally the definition of queer, that you do not fit under the rules of heteronormativity. There's your utility right there
If I could get dudebros to understand one thing, it's that toxic masculinity doesn't prevent you from making emotional decisions. It's like how the English used to consider swimming a waste of time even for sailors, and all that did was pretty much guarantee that anyone who fell overboard would drown immediately. If you spend your life denying your emotions, your emotions will still affect you, you'll just have no skills to manage or cope with them. Imo this is why dudebros rage out so easily.
Question: does there exist a fediverse instance for kids? I'm thinking of a server that's well moderated and probably defederated from any major instances (including .social) as well as any that allow explicit content. Like a social media kiddie pool. It'd be cool to have an app like messenger kids that isn't owned by billionaires so kids can be online without having their entire life story harvested for data @feditips
@failedLyndonLaRouchite@jplebreton@parismarx step one is mutual aid. The reason billionaires have so much power over people is because we have no way to feed and house ourselves without contributing to their game. We need to rebuild community and start taking care of each other in order to diminish their leverage. Most people won't need to do more than this, but if ppl don't do it the power difference will stay near insurmountable. People don't have power if their basic needs aren't met
@nando161 one thing I noticed when doing outreach work, is that there is indeed a correlation between homelessness and drugs. But in the majority of cases, the person started using drugs to cope with being homeless. Which is the reverse of the common narrative. You try going for a week getting kicked awake by cops every time you fall asleep where people can see you, and see how long it takes before you're using chemicals to stay awake.
