Vincarsi (vincarsi@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 06:46:08 JST Vincarsi @ryanhoulihan You're right about that. I had to delete the app... The algorithm is too good, I was losing entire days to the scroll. I genuinely became attached to several people who fit in the same weird niche as me and I'm grateful that I got the chance to know they're out there. But I really couldn't keep myself off there. Yt shorts isn't as addictive BECAUSE the algorithm is so much worse. When I get enough videos in a row that annoy me, it's way easier to convince myself to close it down.

I have zero use for it and the format in general.
I do constantly wonder why people willingly overlook very serious issues that TikTok's true ownership represents to its users in terms of data privacy alone.
The fact that it's still controlled and used by a hostile foreign government to get data about its users all over the globe.
It's been used as an espionage & counterintelligence tool, attaching code to sessions that compromises device security or network security and more. -

Kiloku (kiloku@burnthis.town)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 07:18:44 JST Kiloku @upmultimedia @ryanhoulihan I think the only reason I haven't gotten into it (which applies to Shorts and Reels as well) is that there's no way to browse through what you like without autoplay, like just seeing a big list of new videos from all the people you follow. And there's also no video controls (fast-forward, rewind, scrub, etc.)
I wish it was at least an option, even if off by default. -

Kiloku (kiloku@burnthis.town)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 07:18:45 JST Kiloku @upmultimedia @ryanhoulihan interestingly that was the vibe on old school YouTube (2009-ish). Almost everything was more "natural" and by individuals having fun or sharing their knowledge/ideas for the sake of it

E_Nonymouse (e_nonymouse@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 07:21:10 JST E_Nonymouse @ryanhoulihan I strongly disagree with that characterization.
The apathy you mention (no disrespect intended) is a huge problem for data privacy.
US companies that operate within a body of laws Vs entities who must answer to the CCP for any reason without limits; that thinking seems deeply flawed. The CCP murdered its own citizens with tanks, It tries to hack the public wiki to delete references to that every year, removed references of it inside China. I could go on but there is no comparison.

Kiloku (kiloku@burnthis.town)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 07:58:20 JST Kiloku @ryanhoulihan @upmultimedia it has been a while since I tried, but doesn't that do the instant autoplay videos thing as you scroll, but limited to accounts you follow?
