@skinnylatte I had someone insist to me last week that there were checkpoints between states and that I didn't really know what was happening here
it's bad, yes, but I also didn't get stopped when I drove to Seattle last week

@douglasvb @skinnylatte I don't think this person had ever been to the US
but he was very happy to lecture me about how things are here
strangely I didn't feel the need to share my thoughts about his country's shortcomings
because I have boundaries
@ai6yr it reads like an undergrad who is trying desperately not to write this essay
people talk a lot about the futility of individual action in the face of the large-scale problems we face
but I notice Jimmy Carter thought it was worthwhile to pick up a hammer
and I think there's no reason not to work at all scales
it currently looks like low tide on Coos Bay even though we should be just shy of 6'
sirens and lots of traffic noise are audible from my house
mad props to @ingalls for telling me to get a weather radio last year
I'm evacuated, safe at home, and watching the water go out of the bay
I'll keep you posted
all this brown out on the bay should be under several feet of water at current tides
lots of sirens, engine noises
the wave is supposed to hit the entrance to the bay in about 3 minutes
@tim @ai6yr meanwhile people are going, we can't own our own servers, what would that be like?!?
well it would probably be a lot like the Archive of Our Own, which came out of the LJ debacle
and last time I checked that was still chugging along independently, consistently high-use despite its mess and governance issues
@ai6yr @tim I hate to say it but I'm unsurprised that "consistent UI" turns out to be a winning formula
over "an actual consideration of the consequences of one's actions"
@ai6yr @tim lather, rinse, repeat
or, I remember how long people stayed on Livejournal well after it was obvious the whole thing had been bought out by the Russian government and was being used to target dissidents
@tim I mean I think that's what a lot of people want
"like things have always been"
@seachanger yeah, he seems to have gone off the rails, even the health stuff where I'm like, sure he has a point...he's taken it to the most bonkers extreme
on the other hand, all these big ego guys, you have to wonder how long they're going to actually show up for meetings with each other
it's like the opposite of a functional team of professionals
@seachanger will admit I've found it pretty funny people freaking out about how we're all going to die if we follow some of RFK's advice
people I live in Oregon we don't have fluoride in the water, we get that from mouthwash and the dentist, it's fine
and I rarely wear sunscreen and the dermatologist says my skin is in amazing shape...because I don't like to apply any chemicals to myself when I don't absolutely have to, so I wear a big hat and long sleeves
@seachanger we absolutely WILL die if we don't get MMR vaccinations tho
and no I didn't give my kid autism by getting them vaccinated, fuck right off with that dehumanzing crap and learn to value and respect neurodivergent people
@tim @liamvhogan apparently necessary in those parts of the nation that aren't sensible about these matters ;)
@liamvhogan we do not get "I VOTED" stickers in Oregon
we get the satisfaction of mail-in ballots and consistently achieving the nation's highest voter turnout rates
which yes we're pretty smug about
after listening to ham radio operators doing disaster relief work in western NC this weekend, I'm thinking it would be a good idea to get licensed
but I live in a rural area, and the closest in-person classes are two hours away, on a night I've already got a standing commitment
does anyone in the #hamradio community have thoughts about this online option?
IDK I'm going to be pretty happy if what brings down Big AI is the years we spent shitposting and writing pornographic fanfiction
