@mekkaokereke @UP8 @dalias It has been reported time and time again that enragement actually is what ranks at the top of engagement rankings.

Optimizing for engagement may be harmful but it gives the companies behind the platforms the advertiser money, and that's what they want.

They might somewhat dampen the edge in their homeland so they are not ousted from there but that's about it.

@jernej__s @Polychrome Can you imagine the 'productivity' drop if 'professional' translators took hours to translate a single anime episode? 😜

@Sujiyan @nano There is a big resistance to cryptocurrencies, and at first I thought it's misunderstood.

But it turns out that it's primarily a Ponzi scheme and with only secondary function as a currency.

The fact that it took 10 years to make Lightning that makes payments feasible speaks for something.

I would not be too worried about media over p2p networks. It's something that worked before.

Another problem is that moderation on p2p networks is going to be challenging if they ever get significant user base.

Where your social network graph is stored would depend on the implementation but it's generally a non-issue. Local settings or stored in the network shared data in some way.

@Sujiyan @nano The 'own your account' concept sort of works for any cryptography based decentralized network. You have your private key that makes it possible to author content in the name of your account, and so long as you get it to the network in any way it is there.

Last attempt in this area I noticed is Secure Scuttlebutt.

Nostr might be in that space as well skipping the p2p part but the community seems very cryptocurrency oriented.

@Sujiyan @nano There are other more experimental and more decentralized networks than ActivityPub.

There might be some technical and UX downsides but above all the user base will be much smaller 😜
