@nano Eventually we have to own our account as private property and fediverse is just not good enough (as for now)

Suji Yan (sujiyan@mstdn.jp)'s status on Monday, 31-Jul-2023 01:04:12 JST Suji Yan @hramrach @nano i kinda believe for now i've explored almost all options and know most of these dev/core team. They all have amazing points but need lots of collabration and polishing. That's also why I myself start to work in this field by building projects, non profit donation, investing, acquiring companies, educating.. a long process.
The other group of ppl i think have deep understanding are early twitter member like jack etc. but they have their own limitation as well. -

There might be some technical and UX downsides but above all the user base will be much smaller 😜

Suji Yan (sujiyan@mstdn.jp)'s status on Monday, 31-Jul-2023 01:26:34 JST Suji Yan @hramrach @nano ssb is way too p2p not gonna work for multi media file, which is eventually becoming a needed part for social (think abt Pawoo and TikTok). In order to make multi media sharing we also need sth like ipfs etc.
'Own your account' Yes you're right any cryptographic ID gonna work partially - but the social graph and posts need to be somewhere as well.
Nostr is very interesting. I wont say its too cryptocurrency oriented - it's too bitcoin oriented.. -

hramrach (hramrach@stranger.social)'s status on Monday, 31-Jul-2023 01:26:35 JST hramrach @Sujiyan @nano The 'own your account' concept sort of works for any cryptography based decentralized network. You have your private key that makes it possible to author content in the name of your account, and so long as you get it to the network in any way it is there.
Last attempt in this area I noticed is Secure Scuttlebutt.
Nostr might be in that space as well skipping the p2p part but the community seems very cryptocurrency oriented.

Suji Yan (sujiyan@mstdn.jp)'s status on Monday, 31-Jul-2023 01:29:18 JST Suji Yan @hramrach @nano for nostr ppl they wont even try other p2p file solution like IPFS; wont say try Ethereum and others for payment. Soo its too bitcoin lol.
Another thing is Nostr/ at least Damus core team is very naive. Proud to be banned by Apple & CCP. Unfortunately they know nothing about CCP *(well even know nothing about apple and how apple work in China). From that perspective Elon at least know whats going on in mainland China - though i doubt his roadmap on X.
Still long way to go. -

Suji Yan (sujiyan@mstdn.jp)'s status on Monday, 31-Jul-2023 01:35:23 JST Suji Yan @hramrach @nano all these reasons lead to some of our action/plan including keep maintain mstdn.jp/cloud and acquire pawoo; donate to mastodon and the ios mastodon app; keep the conversation w/ team like bluesky/ nostr; keep a close eye on cryptographic / blockchain based experiments;
I'm also lucky that at my age i'm able to manage this level of treasury and fund; working with my team with a size big enough to try solving this problem. -

Suji Yan (sujiyan@mstdn.jp)'s status on Monday, 31-Jul-2023 01:36:03 JST Suji Yan @hramrach @nano I have huge respect to Durov and Telegram team even though Telegram is centralized. But hope our work can help more people to jump in social network with ownership and less censorship.

I would not be too worried about media over p2p networks. It's something that worked before.Another problem is that moderation on p2p networks is going to be challenging if they ever get significant user base.
Where your social network graph is stored would depend on the implementation but it's generally a non-issue. Local settings or stored in the network shared data in some way.
