This blog post nails the feeling I've had as I encountered some social media posts. It's especially glaring when it comes as a response to a rather normal sounding post. I bet this person's explanation of why this happens so often is correct and it is remarkable to me how the flame gets fanned on and on. It keeps the money flowing to the owners of the sites.

"There is a specific flavor of overly cool, casually careless, sarcastic, flippant, at times vitriolic undertone to everything that is hard to describe and pinpoint, mixed in with the latest meme speak (L, ratio, touch grass, etc.). Language formed throughout the years to attain maximum engagement within the culture of Twitter or Tumblr. The way they behave feels like it is part of a huge collective hivemind and makes them feel inauthentic and replaceable. If they didn't have different usernames and bios attached, I would not be able to tell them apart."

Liz, that is an excellent question!! I use Linux and almost every program as well as the OS is opensource and also without cost to me. I figure these folks must love what they do. My part is to donate money and to take care in reporting bugs.

The community around all this software is another aspect that I have participated in, more in the past when I felt more competent to help answer questions of newbies, recalling the help I got when I was a linux newbie and needed help.

This Westerner eats almost everything with a spoon or fingers. I sometimes have the first couple bites with a fork while the stir fry or pasta is still very hot and I want to take an itsy bitsy bite not to burn my mouth, but then shift to the spoon, and it is a larger spoon, not a teaspoon.

Awhile back you were talking about The Three Body Problem which got me motivated to try reading the book again (English translation). The first time I gave up not following what was happening. This time the story clicked a bit and I relaxed into it. This morning I found great news. The Chinese video segments are available in the U.S. There were 3 available previously, but I can get them on PBS (Public Broadcast) now with a donation. I'm excited to watch the movie series along as I read the book. The book is so good with footnotes from the translator. I love the feel of the culture. It's hard to describe the shift in perspective, but it is enriching. Here is the link to the series for those who might be interested (US only, I think:

Having a flip phone that I use only for phone calls helps me. Having the distance of going to my computer lets my mind more easily travel to something else. It eases the curiosity and I see other things to stimulate me and grab my attention. And when I go to the computer, Obsidian is open, so I tend to see what is there and gravitate to whatever is on there to do. Social media is part of my morning routine after a couple of other things and limited to a certain time when I do the next thing in the routine.

Joining TheStoryGraph helped me. I've enjoyed the graphs they give to show me my reading trends. I did challenges for a couple years and boosted my reading. Now I've decided to listen to podcasts instead of audiobooks, because the podcasts are really helpful to me so my number of books is going to go down this year. As long as I keep the reading habit with a mix of fiction and nonfiction, I'll be happy.

I can only read through translation and am encouraged to make a second attempt at reading Three Body. Your discussion on the movie is helpful to me.

I remember a time when I decided to read books at the library alphabetically by author. One of the first was a translation of a Japanese SF and I remember the feel of such a different way of seeing. It let me know the world is much bigger than I how I see. I can at least reach out and touch even without total understanding. There is much that crosses back and forth over barriers, things that matter.
