Trying to figure out a mentally healthy routine to follow instead of impulsively & compulsively checking #socialmedia throughout the day. What do you do to prevent social media from becoming too toxic? Tips appreciated!

Like you I cleaned out my follows, specifically anything controversy generating. And I set my phone to black and white for a good long time. It's amazing how less appealing it is to look at a gray-scale interface.

Agavi (evaack@hachyderm.io)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 17:08:32 JST Agavi @liztai I pretty much fill up my time with other things and turn to social media when I feel like engaging instead of just scrolling. I haven't gotten around to using filters and further curation but that's a great idea

Yeah I just need to be strict and create a routine for myself that helps me stay ... not so stimulated, especially at night.

Glitch (glitchontwitch@ohai.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 18:07:13 JST Glitch @liztai oof, fair. Though I did get the sharp reminder that lack of sleep in and of itself produces headaches. That said, yeah that’s not fun. Do you have anything that can help lighten the load?

Anita Lewis (ajlewis2@social.vivaldi.net)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 20:17:07 JST Anita Lewis Having a flip phone that I use only for phone calls helps me. Having the distance of going to my computer lets my mind more easily travel to something else. It eases the curiosity and I see other things to stimulate me and grab my attention. And when I go to the computer, Obsidian is open, so I tend to see what is there and gravitate to whatever is on there to do. Social media is part of my morning routine after a couple of other things and limited to a certain time when I do the next thing in the routine.

I don't know, delayed gratification doesn't seem to work with me for one, so it's nice to be able to get it over with first thing in the morning lol

chuls (chuls@mastodon.world)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 22:04:06 JST chuls @liztai I delete the apps from my phone to disrupt the automations. Some of it I will need sooner or later for communication, work, etc but the habit can be broken up. I may check IG on my phone now but after I had deleted it everywhere I didn’t put it back on my tablet. I have it on my phone again, but use it less. Haven’t had FB and others on my phone for ages.

Filtering aggressively keeps the toxic stuff out, but doesn’t keep me from compulsively checking. In the past, I’ve set daily screen time limits on apps I use too much. Like parental controls, so it makes me enter a code if I want to keep using it. That helps. And a substitute habit helps. If I want to scroll on my phone, read a book there instead of checking social media. It’s still screen time, but it’s immersive concentration, with a different effect on the mind.
