In case after case, the Supreme Court has whispered, “We’ll hold off to see whether Donald Trump finds his way back into office,” even as the justices acted — repeatedly — to make that possible, if not more likely.
I've been writing a series of pieces about what I've learned about how various key systems work, and the latest is on money: How the ultra-wealthy see money in a fundamentally different way than the rest of us do. It's not a bucket! https://www.anildash.com/2024/07/02/money-flows/
@jalcine@cferdinandi@emma agreed on all these points — and please do share them. In particular, I think the partial gag was unnecessary and shouldn’t have happened; it was a vestige of legacy contracts. Most of those other options were discussed within management, but honestly one of the reasons we weren’t able to do more is that I didn’t have full buy-in at the management or board level, and that would have made it possible to go with less common options.
@cferdinandi@emma We did end up talking through terms of severance with their union even though the agreement wasn’t in place yet, which I hope was seen as the sign of good faith it was intended to be, including recall rights for those who were laid off. Obviously, fault for the layoff lies with me as a leader, and certainly I deserve any criticism people have around that.
@cferdinandi@emma we had a layoff at the beginning of covid that was already in motion prior to our workers organizing; that’s part of why I was supportive of the move because we knew it was a risk since we were a startup in a tough fundraising environment. I don’t want to speak on behalf of the workers who organized, but I believe that was a driver for them as well.
The song "Purple Rain" would become the grand finale of the greatest Super Bowl performance ever. Here's the deeper story behind Prince's scintillating halftime show, including the deep historical & political context to his performance that day. https://www.anildash.com/2021/02/05/how-prince-won-the-super-bowl/
Forty years ago today, Prince & the Revolution released "Purple Rain", his most popular work, and one of the artistic and commercial peaks of the 1980s. The title ballad was an unusual and unlikely track to have become Prince's signature song, and this is the story of how it came to be. https://www.anildash.com/2014/07/25/i_know_times_are_changing/
@sandofsky incredible read, thanks for gathering it all in one place. I’m thinking again of the people who spoke up against him and were targeted by VCs who attacked their careers and livelihoods.
