Forty years ago today, Prince & the Revolution released "Purple Rain", his most popular work, and one of the artistic and commercial peaks of the 1980s. The title ballad was an unusual and unlikely track to have become Prince's signature song, and this is the story of how it came to be. https://www.anildash.com/2014/07/25/i_know_times_are_changing/

The song "Purple Rain" would become the grand finale of the greatest Super Bowl performance ever. Here's the deeper story behind Prince's scintillating halftime show, including the deep historical & political context to his performance that day. https://www.anildash.com/2021/02/05/how-prince-won-the-super-bowl/

@anildash I have been looking for a full video of this performance for years, every time I read about it. Is there one?

@anildash That performance is featured at the National Museum of African American Music in nashville, on a huge screen covering a wall, along with various clips from other artists. Every time it played people would stand there and watch it all the way through.
