@amszmidt @mav I'm not sure how that's possible. GPL infects the MIT licensed code, which allows things GPL does not.

WordPress has successfully argued that WP themes and plugins cannot be licensed as MIT because of WP's GPL license.

Open source is kind of broken
Yesterday, I mentioned that I’m working on a Web Component UI library for people who love HTML. One thing I’ve been mindful of as I work through this project is how very broken and exploitative the open source ecosystem is, both as a maintainer of and consumer of open source projects. I want to explore this a bit more, and offer some thoughts. Let’s dig in! I owe my career to open source!

@mav Sort of. It's "infectious" in that any derivative work must take on the same license. If you, for example, use a GPL library to build a website, all other parts of that website are then also licensed under GPL.

This is why all WP themes must be GPL licensed. As a result, GPL and MIT code are incompatible together.

      A no-hassle static site CMS
About a year ago, I wrote about CMS options for static site generators. I personally love writing in markdown, but if you build sites for clients, that’s not always a great option for them. A CMS is often a must-have. And most of the options are there, frankly, are kind of annoying. They all work, but they typically require a lot more configuration that I like to deal with. So I was really excited when a friend pointed me to Page CMS, a new no-hassle CMS for static site generators.

My wife didn't have time to prep her coffee before a Zoom meeting this morning, so I took 15 minutes to put on a whole ass tuxedo (with hand-tied bowtie) and deliver it to her butler style.

      Durable websites
My friend Brad Frost recently shared his experience owning well-made physical goods, and how most digital goods (and modern physical goods) are made to be cheap, ephemeral, and disposable… Designing things that last a long time — perhaps even multiple human life spans — is not a distant pipe dream; it’s very much a reality. I cherish the hammers, wrenches, and other tools I inherited from both of my grandfathers.

      The language of fascism
Yes, this is a political article in a newsletter and on a site about web development. If you follow me for tech, not politics, well… they’re inseparable, but please feel free to stop reading now. Lately I’ve noticed a rise in fascist language in various online community spaces (tech-related and otherwise). When we think of fascist language, we think of overt calls for violence, direct assaults on people, and anger. And sometimes, that’s exactly what it looks like.

Yesterday I had some describe the US’s funding of genocide as “an exaggeration” before saying “it’s complicated.”

    It’s not, and it’s not.

we send money and bombs directly to Israel. Israel then literally indirectly uses them to slaughter Palestinians en masse, mostly women, children, and civilians. they have even publicly stated their goal is to ensure that the Palestinian state no longer exists.

Sorry folks, that’s a fucking genocide!
