Here it is: An inside look at what it’s like to serve on a board of directors, in organizations ranging from tiny non-profits all the way up to multi-billion-dollar companies. This covers a lot of the biggest topics and questions people have asked me over the years about how this stuff actually works. https://www.anildash.com/2024/06/20/dash-board/
We distilled a full hour of exciting announcements from Fastly down into a super-quick, action-packed highlight video that shows you all the new stuff in under 6 minutes, including the new *free* developer accounts. https://youtu.be/7ViUxWQoj_c?si=YMYZgKzESyOXdHMH (Watch to see what else we can help you make 10x as fast.)
@kissane Agreed. It's my post, so I should decide who may reply. Simple is that. The so called freedom of speech is not the same as the freedom of reply. MAS-37 (Restrict who can reply to a post) is on the roadmap, but under the section Exploring. @renchap Is the exploring phase already started, or else we loose people to Bluesky. 😢
Bluesky has reply-gating (you can set who can reply to a post, like people you follow or a given list or no one) and is now testing out post-publication reply locking.
I just want to yell for a second about how humane and consent-forward these features are, especially after seeing some people here losing their minds when someone asked for gating recently because they felt (alas, not a paraphrase) entitled to always be able to respond.
I’m working on a blog post about what it’s been like serving on many boards of directors over the years, on everything from tiny non-profits to multi-billion-dollar companies. What would you want to know about how boards work and what board members actually do? I’ll try to answer as much as I can.
Feeling so welcomed at our regular neighborhood spot because they were playing Prince when I came in, but then also apologized to me when they turned it off because “it’s just, like… too much sexual energy for 10am.”
The media and journalism worlds have been beaten up for so many years that it's hard to have hope. But the indie, worker-owned or non-profit digital media outlets that we see rising today remind me of how alt-weeklies used to inspire us in the last century. Maybe the New Alt Media is one vital way forward. https://anildash-blog.glitch.me/2024/06/14/the-new-alt-media/
I have been using #Fastly nearly since their inception, and it is one of the few tech companies that never disappointed me. They are very obsessed by performance and customer service (< 5 minute response time on tickets).
They love the Fediverse and OSS, and are providing a lot of projects (including Mastodon) with a lot of resources.
Their biggest issue? There was no free plan. But this is now fixed 🎉
Get ready: in just about 2 hours, it’s Fastly ‘s first *ever* special event for developers. We’ll be talking about the exciting future of @glitchdotcom, the most-requested features you’ve wanted from @devs, and even some big surprises. Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgNjS1_kOW8
This distinction is important, because you'll see how silly US attempts to stop school shootings are:
Almost no school mass shootings occur in predominantly Black areas with Black shooters. It just doesn't happen. But whenever people talk about "preventing school shooters," they put metal detectors in schools in Black areas?
Meanwhile, almost all school shootings occur in predominantly white suburban and rural areas, with white male shooters. They don't get metal detectors.
