    @eloquence Worth noting - they allude to a social media platform run by themselves. That is "Trevorspace": https://www.trevorspace.org/

    It seems like something that would be a good thing to federate with ActivityPub, long term. Though that would make it more of a target for harassment, it would also dramatically expand its usefulness as a community.

    @TechConnectify You've probably seen it, and I don't want to imply that you haven't, but some people reading this might not have - the Alt-Right Playbook is a good reference for this kind of strategy.

    A good starting point that touches on the JAQ thing -

    @mariyadelano I figured trying to subscribe to @zuck@threads.net might be a good test, but I get a 503 SSL error.

    @lapingvino
    On a tour bus in New Zealand the other day, the guide asked everyone where they were from. The Americans, without exception, listed off city or state, sometimes both, but never their country. It was a little funny but really underlined their basic assumption that the USA is their whole world.

    @Daojoan Yeah, it's one of those invisible technologies that underpins a lot of things. Just because something isn't making a billionaire more billions doesn't mean it's not a success.

    The end goal of any technology should be to become invisible. The more attention it takes up, the less successful it is as a technology. One that is always front and centre, one that's constantly novel and interesting, is a *failed* tech. Good tech is fated to become BORING, eventually.

    @mmasnick I'm skeptical of their survival - they have yet to engage with many of the really hard problems of moderation in a federated world, and with governance and funding as they move away from centralization.

    But that said, the enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy. I'll cheer them on to the extent that they don't become my enemy. :)

    I wish them all the luck engaging with these problems and hope they succeed and become part of the wider federated social media space.

    @strypey Even if you're not really a fan of masks, there are contexts in which they are absolutely appropriate, and I think there's a VERY strong argument for the use of masks in all medical settings, even if COVID didn't exist entirely.

    I agree that masks by the general public in most settings are a hard sell, and *should* have been a temporary measure until health authorities could get proper air filtration and circulation regulations in place, but that didn't happen.

    @feditips Good call on the website, I'll redirect people there in future. Much simpler than having them try to figure out how to browse your profile on another server.

    Mastodon really needs to get some way of pre-loading, like, the top 20 favourited/boosted posts on a feed when you click on it, or at least the 20 most recent, then loading 20 more if you scroll down, etc.

    I believe there's a ticket about it that's like 5 years old. :P
