@maybeanerd@tchambers@activitypubblueskybridge Not trying to be contrarian but there's a large corpus of competing standards leading to technological progress and innovation. (IMAP vs. POP, Bluray vs. HD-DVD, even TCP/IP emerged out of the protocol wars* .)
ActivityPub is a very good spec, but AT has brought some very good ideas to the table, ideas that probably wouldn't have been considered before if there weren’t other standards to suggest other ideas.
@tchambers@activitypubblueskybridge@snarfed.org I did look through the BridgyFed repo yesterday and I may have missed it because I'm a complete noob to the project but I didn't see anything to answer the question. Would be happy if I'm wrong and there is some info there. 🙂
@tchambers@activitypubblueskybridge@snarfed.org Is there any info about how a Bluesky PDS would present itself to the fediverse? Something appealing about AT is that you can use a bare domain as your public identifier, but that of course can’t work when bridged to the fediverse. I’m mostly hoping to avoid some default like fediverse@mergesort.social and hopefully being able to use a custom handle as my identifier (like joe@mergesort.social).
@videah Gotcha, no worries! I'd love to have it working because it almost feels like I can't go back to using the main app after having the Bluesky in Ivory experience, but obviously no pressure because I appreciate the heck out of the work you've done and know it’s dependent on others.
@videah This might be a Bluesky thing but in case it’s not I figured I’d let you know that Skybridge seems to not be working [for me] right now, the timeline fails to load over and over again.
@videah@kyle Wanted to say thank you, and sent some money your way! If you have some instructions or a docker instance forthcoming I might host my own instance in the future if it helps take some load off your plate.
@FinchHaven@robertvh@tchambers@activitypubblueskybridge I'm not necessarily suggesting you need to go to Bluesky and find a new community today, I was more so saying that if the process of observing a global feed never feels like good content. It might just be me but I've never found the Federated Feed to be very compelling either, I think Eugen has said that it was mostly created as a way to give people content when there was little usage so I don't think it's particularly useful today.
@FinchHaven@robertvh@tchambers@activitypubblueskybridge As a person who used to be able to peer into the Twitter firehose I can assure you that's not a good way to enjoy a social network. Just like any other place you need to find your community and if you do then the space becomes interesting.
“Apps genius” - Colleen. I used to work on making Twitter a bit healthier, then that all went to hell. Now I make puns and indie apps @redpandaclub.Born and raised New Yorker, just trying to do a little good and be the friend you made along the way. 🐶 🍕 🐱Formerly @mergesort on Twitter, now @mergesort or @mergesort.me on Bluesky.
