   @maybeanerd @tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge Not trying to be contrarian but there's a large corpus of competing standards leading to technological progress and innovation. (IMAP vs. POP, Bluray vs. HD-DVD, even TCP/IP emerged out of the protocol wars* .)

   ActivityPub is a very good spec, but AT has brought some very good ideas to the table, ideas that probably wouldn't have been considered before if there weren’t other standards to suggest other ideas.

     @mergesort @maybeanerd @tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge The difference is that Activitypub is already competing against the current, locked, social media landscape, where all the money is. So AT splitting up that little area, instead of working to improving AP, is just making the transition to open social media even harder. You see it with how people splitting between BS and AP services makes it even easier for Threads to dominate.

I saw in Bluesky many who would not have choosen Mastodon or any other AP possibilities (mentalities paly a role in the choice we do). But also, it is not only about protocols but about what fit the best for us. I tried Bluesky and realized that Firefish is more what I prefer. Could Firefish be possible in AT ?

     That's the beauty of AP: You can choose Firefish, and I can choose Mastodon, but we can still talk. Bluesky could be 99 % of what it now is on AP... (And perhaps they could help improve things like identification and migration.)

Some prefer AP instances (just Bluesky for now), some AT instances, some prefer Nostr. Saying AT developers should just have been AP developers is like saying Canadians should just be Americans since both are in North America.

     @mimo @mergesort @maybeanerd @tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge Yeah, I agree - that's why most people on Bluesky wouldn't have cared if it was on AP instead of AT. (Except for the fact that they would have a couple of million more people to "exchange with".)

     My main point, is that what people _do_ care about, is the feeling of fragmentation. And that makes it more tempting to just pick X or Threads.
