@Mabande @aral Exactly. And when the left actually starts shouting that this is not ok, all they have to say is « oh look at how unstable they are, they just want to damage our institutions, they can’t cooperate ».

@aral It is extremely frightening to see this man casually dismiss the party and program most French people voted for.
The French Republic was created with very few anti-authoritarian protections, under the assumption that most people wouldn’t vote for a despot. Problem is, people can turn into despots, and now we see the issue: Macron will build a Frankenstein government to make sure he can pass his anti-social policies. Heinous.

Time for the usual #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
In this one, we have a lot more details about how Cosmic will work, and what it will support with the first alpha version that releases next week.
We also have the Linux desktop market share reaching its highest point, and a study pointing to macOS as the least resilient OS when it comes to being completely taken over by malicious attackers.

Anyone who says Linux is difficult to use, annoying, or requires a lot of user time and input to work needs to watch the latest video from @snazzyq.
Just seeing the amount of pop-ups, updates, issues, and hoops you need to jump through to use a new Windows PC is insane (granted, some issues in the video are because it’s an ARM PC, but most of the annoying interactions aren’t dependent on that).
As Quinn says, it’s likely faster to install Arch than to setup a new Windows PC…

Microsoft now blaming the EU for the crowdstrike issue, because the EU made them open their APIs to third party developers in 2009 is hilarious.
If your APIs had any kind of gracious error handling, this wouldn’t be an issue. Fix your bad code, Microsoft, stop pointing fingers.

@aral I am so relieved. As a French citizen, this was a pretty horrifying week, with a surprisingly delightful conclusion.

We’re all pretty much used to the old desktop metaphor, with windows, menus, panels, launchers, system trays, a desktop and icons, etc.
But these sort of suck, if you really think about it it, so I took a look at these old UI conventions, and tried (and failed) to come up with a better solution for each:

@thanius @tilvids Honstely, a system where people could donate cents, and this pool goes towards the instance and the video’s creator would be great!

Here is this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
In this one, we have #Google pulling the trigger on Manifest v3 despite a lot of concerns for ad and tracker blockers, #GNOME adding accent color support, some interesting ARM and RISC V devices running Linux, and Mozilla buying an ad focused company:

To anyone wondering why videos aren’t on the Peertube channel anymore: apparently, it’s an issue with the yt-dlp library used to sync from YouTube to Peertube. The instance I use is affected, and plenty of other VPS users seem to have the same problem.
The gist of it is: Google reports the library as a bot, and thus the sync can’t be performed. So, for now, videos will be on YT only, until this can be circumvented.
Sorry for the inconvenience! -

Funny to see even Apple recognized that « AI » is now universally distrusted as a term or concept, and preferred to call it « Apple intelligence » to distance themselves from all the horror stories.
The fact remains everything they presented is lukewarm at best, and seems superfluous to any workflow I ever had when I had a real job, or any that I have these days, but it still made me smile to see them avoid the term.
Also, window tiling in macOS. Hilariously late, but welcome!

@fell I live in France, where light bulbs flicker at 50hz. If I record (and when I did) at 60fps, I get some nasty light flickering in the background, which some people didn’t notice, but others really did :)

@fabio @Techaltar @dansup @jwildeboer Yeah, honestly, if there was an easy way to support me on PeerTube, I would much likely promote that first instead of YouTube. I would at least try to push PeerTube first for a while to see if that worked out.
Same for the podcast on Castopos, I would invest more time and effort on it if it could easily be user supported without having to mention Patreon in each episode.

@Chocobozzz @fabio @Techaltar @dansup @jwildeboer It’s just a link to another payment system, with no integrations inside of Peertube though (unless I’m mistaken?)
Something like financially subscribing to a channel to get members-only content, or just setting up a « each time I watch a video from this person, I want to pay 1 cent automatically » sort of preference, these types of things :)

@britter Oh I’m not touching that topic with a 10 foot pole. I’ve learned the hard way to avoid anything remotely controversial on my channel, as it just creates stress and anger for me. Not worth it!
I do think the typical Hyprland community behavior is the exact fringe of the Linux community that I want no part of, the « muh freedom of speech » weirdos that think being nice to others is being political, and think « woke » means anything, but I’m not covering them publicly.

@britter Yeah, basically, anyone who thinks « woke » means something or says something horrible and then « it’s a joke bro » is banned immediately from any place that I run, and I refuse to give them a voice, more than what they already have :)
