Text is just text, but when you can actually see them, it feels more real. Empathy with and/or fear of their reaction becomes a stronger factor.

Each chapter (there was an entire chapter just on salad dressings) was written by a luxury restaurant chef specializing in that thing. They all made a point of how regular grocery store ingredients are inferior and you really should hunt down a specialty shop with the fancy stuff.
Two of my favorite glaring examples of what went wrong:

That they had room for more bags in the cargo hold, but not people in the passenger compartment. You could fight it, but it'd cost more than you'd get back, which is what they're counting on. It really sucks, and the airlines have gotten progressively worse over the course of the last couple of decades.

Paul-Gabriel Wiener (wearshats@realsocial.life)'s status on Tuesday, 01-Oct-2024 08:23:09 JST Paul-Gabriel Wiener My friend @Tinu dedicated her life to helping disabled people. Organizing and supporting the community, getting individuals the help and attention they needed, treating the people around her with compassion.
COVID knocked her cancer out of remission. She kept going. Until insurance stopped paying for her treatment. She died this past Friday.
Now her family is left with the costs, and without the income she struggled to bring in. If you can help:

Paul-Gabriel Wiener (wearshats@realsocial.life)'s status on Monday, 23-Sep-2024 05:19:40 JST Paul-Gabriel Wiener @Antiqueight The problem is they don't specify what kind of faux meat it is. Lab-grown? Powdered bean slurry? Tofu cubes cooked in the style of chicken?
20 years ago, my sister had her graduation party at a vegan Chinese restaurant just so my grandfather would be able to attend. He saw "pork" on the menu and said "I'll have a salad." We explained it wasn't really pork, and showed him the seal on the menu, but it wasn't until the chef came out with the Kosher certification that he would eat.

2. Mass transit should ideally be free.
3. That station is a rare exception in that it's ADA accessible. But unless my origin, destination, and any transfer points all have elevators, I can't go. The MTA is legally obligated to fix this, but they can't because they don't have the funding for operations, repairs, and upgrades. Congestion pricing "pause" makes that worse.

It's a "well-regulated militia" for national security. At the time, the only military the US had were the US militias, renamed in 1903 to the National Guard. They now supply their troops with guns.
Warren Burger, Nixon's chief justice of SCOTUS, said he'd strike 2A if he could because the plain language makes it clear that it's moot. He said the gun lobby's claims there were 2A rights was "the greatest hoax ever perpetuated on the American people."

The Whiskey Rebellion was an armed insurrection against the federal government by citizens claiming governments overreach and unjust burdensome taxes. President Washington called up the well-regulated militias in the name of national defense, legally obligating them to fight under his command whether they agreed or not, and quashed the revolt. That's what the 2nd Amendment is for. Not to legalize treason but to arm the government against it.

Paul-Gabriel Wiener (wearshats@realsocial.life)'s status on Sunday, 25-Aug-2024 21:38:05 JST Paul-Gabriel Wiener @Antiqueight That's a tough line to walk. Even try to bring it up in the disability community and they'll shout about eugenics and ableism, trying to make people believe that it's moral and merciful to get rid of disabled people.
But sometimes quality of life just isn't possible. Although part of me wishes I could find love. But then I worry about how selfish it is. Especially after seeing someone try to hold on to his girlfriend by threatening his life if she left him.

Paul-Gabriel Wiener (wearshats@realsocial.life)'s status on Sunday, 25-Aug-2024 20:06:07 JST Paul-Gabriel Wiener @Antiqueight It's always been my experience, ever since I was a kid.
I do remember as a teen feeling relieved knowing that being diabetic gave me an out. Just knowing that was an option helped a lot, even though I didn't intend to take it. Surviving turning 30 with no progress wasn't easy, but I found I wanted to try.
But about 5 years ago, I realized I was ready. That was a big change, and I haven't gone back.
