@mattly I have had it since massive earaches when I was 3 or 4. it is just part of my life.
3 years back, I got pulsatile tinnitus. that is a physical thing, and a stethoscope can hear it. you absolutely do not want that. UCSF has a clinic for it.

@inthehands I'd put Rogue One above the oh-there's-more? simply becuase it's the glue between Andor and the original
but I did literally LOL becuase your list is pretty close to mine
@mattly oh oh oh! I got you!
Just start using another app to fill your time, for sure the app updating itself will foreground itself at the wrongest moment evar
@mattly there's https://5calls.org/issue/age-verification-internet-privacy/ but it's pretty generic
@mattly (writes and deletes Very Very Long reply which makes it obvious I am still burned out) at Google we were always encouraged by document word limits and style guidance to use semicolons instead of conjunctions. it was the most egregious for performance evals.
I don't recall ever seeing an em dash used
@mattly I confess I have increased my use of em dashes in my writing in the last 18 months or so just to be a butt
@skinnylatte let's see if they still do next week, ha
...is the information in the post incorrect? I'll not boost anything else till we see fallout, but if the post is correct I'll leave my boost as is
@skinnylatte look at those teeth! did you know they have teeth on their tongues?
@mattly wrt people, a long-time strategy is to cut people out of my life who operate at unacceptable levels of untrustworthy. sometimes I have used the term "emotional vampire" for this, but other times it's just ... life is too short. eventually (like now) I am left with a group of close friends.
some people are unreliable in only certain ways. I just remember and cut out those kinds of interactions.
in general I do not ever trust people to pay me back any money loan. so if a friend needs money, I set my expectation that's gone. then I am not feeling betrayed if they never pay it back, and I am happy if they do.
the rest of what you say, well, I am still trying to figure it out. push where I can to make things better? try not to deal with companies and systems that are damaging? there is sometimes no choice. but I'm coming up on 6 months not working, trying to figure that out.
@mattly you can't have it both ways
if they can do that they can hook in modules/microservices to answer factual questions with factual answers and only use the LLM for phrasing.
i think they should solve for that anyhow. very strongly.
@thomasfuchs I'd say they were more performative, but then again, that's hairsplitting, so it's not really an argument!
@thomasfuchs no. It's a prayer for intervention by the great god Murphy
@mattly all I do is run privacy badger and yet get complaints about my "ad blocker" all the damned time
@mattly I'm ~40% in and not happy with it honestly, although I understand how the humour appeals to many.
Your url is, um, localhost
@skinnylatte it's an extreme example of management always evaluating your recommendations as based on what's the most likely to preserve your job as is, instead of being the right thing to do based on the evidence at hand joined with the experience you bring to the table
@skinnylatte displeased as I am about this event, I will contend that you aren't an anonymous anything if you use your US credit card to pay for a service directly. all the banks have anti-"terrorist" KYC going on and if the credit card is associated to a US bank, there it is.
@skinnylatte I do not have a NAS
however I am talking to my friends who do have one for setup and hardware recommendations, becuase I obviously need one
@skinnylatte cannot relate at all to any of it.
Your experiences are legion, I hope you aren't still getting that here in the Bay area, but from my other Asian friends I know my hope is probably vain
@skinnylatte jfc
That sounds like primary school to me. I'm sure I even did that, early on.
We all grew out of it and/or learned better by third grade. I guess that's when kids become aware of how that shit actually hurts others. Then there's mortification that it actually happened at all. Having to interact in person with whoever is getting othered is a powerful counter and a strong lesson on impressionable kids.
I guess the people you ran into never learned that? Or somehow were never sensitized to the impact of their taunts. Ugh
I hope you weren't that hurt by it, although I can't imagine not being
@dalias so to be clear, just setting the lists private is an immediate mitigation?
I haven't touched this feature since... apparently 2020 (and have only ordered one thing from Amazon since WaPo declined to endorse Harris and I dropped Prime like a hot potato). if I can take it private now and reconsider the existence of these lists entirely when I have more time to do so, that is better for me.
