@rysiek @dysfun @mwl I already bought the book, but it turns out reading it is the hard part.
I did read Savaged by Systemd the other day though. Highly recommended.

@dysfun Why would you tell me this.
Now I’ve gotta fucking learn how to run my own mail server.
Did you not see the part where I’m tired?
Dear Fastmail,
I would very much appreciate it if you didn’t come out in favour of a fascist government. I cannot be bothered to change email provider today. I’m tired.
Much love,
Samir.
If you want to know details, perhaps because you were a fan of Gaiman and need to know the truth, then this thread has them.
Do not read unless you have a strong stomach and, ideally, a very weak empathy gland.

@GossiTheDog The vapid, pointless suggestions at the bottom of the screen there are the icing on the cake.
I aspire to be as cool as rachelbythebay.
Here’s her list of things her website doesn’t do.

She doesn’t mention it, but her Atom feed is also perfect; it’s a first-class way to consume her website. It does not truncate or mangle posts.
Ten years ago, I’d wish people a happy new year or birthday or whatever, and say something like, “I hope you have an exciting year!”
Now I say, “I hope this year is relaxing and free of surprises.”
I don’t know if it’s me that’s changed, or the world.
Probably both.
This was waiting for me when I woke up my computer.
Ominous.
An idea that may or may not be terrible, written down so I can get it out of my head and into someone who can do something about it.
What if we started from scratch with code represented as graphs, not text?
It goes without saying, but I’m saying it anyway: if you disagree with me on this, I want to hear it.
Oh mah glob the scroll effect on this article is magnificent.
Hard wrap is conflating content with presentation and should be abolished.
(As are spaces for indentation.)
This summary of all the techbro bullshit was incredibly helpful for me. Thanks for putting it together, @elilla.

If you can help @Sbarry8520 out, please do. I heard he’s had some medical issues recently which have made working and studying very difficult.

@hrefna Oh, I love this observation.
I’ve been very guilty of protesting against “magic” in the past. On reflection, I think what I’m wary of is leaky abstractions. I want to be able to reason about my code/software, and I’m fine with magic as long as it doesn’t interfere with the reasoning.
So thank you for making me dig into this.
@gerbrand @hrefna Yeah, it’s all leaky eventually (Spectre is a great example), but when we’re complaining about magic, we’re almost never complaining about `malloc` lying to us about available memory, are we?
@thisismissem I was once on a team where an absolute champion decided he would be the face of the team. He volunteered for every meeting (and there were so many meetings) so that everyone else could get things done. He was a leader.
They fired him. Not enough code committed.
Just occurred to me that I was probably 11 or 12 when I learned about The Power Of Compound Interest™️ in school, but over 30 when I realised it was the main driver behind generational inequality.
In case you were wondering whether school is political.
Dear Signal,
If I have muted and archived a conversation, I do not want it to reappear every time that person writes to me.
Sincerely,
Samir.
Shit, it works.
No big deal, externally; you can write `$response.status`. But I think the QOL is a lot nicer here.
It's making me think I need to implement CLP/FD so you can write `$response.status in 200..299`. But that's probably a little more tricky than I'm imagining. I haven't even gotten negation (`!=`) working yet.
Next is default parameters.
