Coralie Fargeat wrote, directed and produced it, and a handful of other people produced or associate or executive produced, no actor did.

Any interviews asking things like "what was the most challenging thing" reveal too much of the movie. Don't watch interviews until you've seen it.

Who is Margaret Qualley? How simultaneously intimidating and flattering must it be to be asked "hey would you like to play the 'more perfect and more beautiful' version of Demi Moore"?

She is a producer, did she produce or co-produce this? As for Moore, she must have executive-produced it at the very least, all megastars do these days, maybe not every single movie, but in the case of TV series, they all have screen upon screen of executive producers in the credits now.

I have seen no media buzz about this movie, just a brief pamphlet at the cinema and its presence in the cinema schedule. I knew only the basic premise as we went in. Now I'm curious to find some interviews with Moore and Qualley.

But in case you haven't yet realised how horrible and grotesque the beauty and entertainment industry is, it finally removes all plausibility safety rails, takes it up yet another notch and becomes a different movie, surreal and bizarre, that I'm sure was extremely satisfying to make, and probably accounts for half the budget if you don't count Demi Moore's salary. 😃

Nobody leaves the room unaffected.

The ending is complete. Everything has gone full circle, every Chekov's gun has been fired, and it is all very sad and unsatisfying, but also satisfying.

Not everyone will like it for sure, but if this doesn't take a whole bunch of Oscars, then I really don't know anything about the Oscars.

Would it have been a better movie if it just concluded before the two-hour mark?

Maybe! Certainly for some viewers. But that's not the movie they wanted to make. 😃

From the very start, it uses a combination of beauty and disgust, where it has many scenes using the visual language of beauty, sexiness and attraction, but in a context that makes it never be alluring, just vulnerable and depressing, or perhaps it will make some viewers excited and disgusted with themselves for being excited.

Also from the start, it has a visual style of focusing on the grotesque details of everyday situations, but it stays a plausible speculative "what if we introduced this one premise" fiction until probably a bit before the two-hour mark, at which point it could have ended and it would still have been an evocative and sharp critique of the beauty and entertainment industry. Curtain. Applause. Brilliant movie.

We watched #TheSubstance. It is ... not subtle. 😃

If you wanted to make this movie, it is perfect. Every aspect is extraordinary. Every acting performance, every visual, every beat, every mood, every little thing in every scene is perfect. The only criticism you could have against this movie is that you didn't want this movie.

In case you didn't get the message, it turns it up a notch. And then again. And then again, until at some point, and which point will depend on the person, you will either have to laugh in self-defense, or you will have to leave the room, depending on how strong your stomach is. The alleged dark humor is never haha humor.

I haven't been to SG since. I should go to some open source conference there, it's a nice city and less than 3 h flight away.

In the winter would be best. 😊

I would encourage every Fediverse software project to implement a “dead-man switch" on registrations: if nobody with moderator permissions has been active in the last week, then disable new account creation.

The Fediverse has a significant number of abandoned instances that are used by bad actors to create accounts and send spam.

We implemented this in Mastodon (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/29318) and it has been highly effective.

In Singapore. Last night, in the Middle East blocks, I had Turkish pide and ayran at the Derwish Restaurant. The waitress at the Istanbul Grill next door was wearing a "(^o^) LOL" t-shirt. The last time I had this dish was in Germany, where Ms. Merkel has said that multi-kulti has failed. I say it's doing just fine.

I watched a youtube upload of "Home Movie: The Princess Bride". Some of the actors were really good, some went the extra mile and made some hilarious interpretations or choices of props and environment, but the whole wasn't nearly as interesting and creative as "Shrek Retold".

I did enjoy it, and what I liked about it was that even in this version with no director, no costume department, no scenery, you can still see how great the script and dialogue is, it shines through. Now I want to watch the original again.

One thing that really got me was at the end when Rob Reiner, the original director, played the boy, and his father Carl Reiner played the grandpa.

The boy says, will you come back tomorrow and read it again, and grandpa says "as you wish", winks, and exits the room. And that's the last thing Carl Reiner ever recorded – he passed away only days later.

There are forests and soils and mycelial networks that drive more carbon into the soil, there are solutions like biochar for taking wood and plowing it into the soil, allowing a new tree to grow in that tree's place, there are algea and plankton in the ocean that actually make carbon fall to the ocean floor (the article above just taught me that), there are people working on mechanical and chemical ways of removing carbon from the air.

All of these sinks together cannot compete with how much we are still, *increasingly*, pumping and digging out of the ground.

That has to stop, that's step zero, and then all of these ways of reducing existing carbon can be our way to get back to 20th century climate, maybe some time in the 22nd century. But that's currently a fantasy, as we're not even stopping the escalation of burning 300-million-year-old trees and other plants.

(I had to look it up, trees showed up 370 Mya, so they're in there) 😅

Is your natural carbon sink continually growing its biomass, each year containing more biomass than the year before? Then it's an actual carbon sink. If it's at equilibrium it's a carbon store.

That's also important! Don't cut it down, for the love of our biome, but don't pretend like you can keep burning old trees you pumped out of the ground just because you have a pile of fresh trees just standing around.

If we want to fix our carbon balance we need to first of all stop digging and pumping more carbon out of the ground, because eventually that will all end up in our air. But we also need to start putting it back in the ground where it came from, or putting it somewhere else where it won't go into the atmosphere for a long time, preferably for centuries or even millennia.
