Coldest state in Australia, I guess your only option past that is to hang out in southern NZ during summer or hang out in the northern hemisphere for 3-4 months a year. -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 17-Oct-2024 21:58:43 JST Birdulon @Zergling_man @pyrate @wizardmanperson Flying sucks yeah. I'm hanging out in Japan rn but have to be back in SA for most of December so I have immolation to look forward to in several weeks.
Migrating to japanland seems difficult if you don't have a multinational sponsoring you on a work transfer or marry a citizen. Russia... might be more straightforward with one of their fancy cultural refugee programs but it seems a bit too brave for me. -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 15-Oct-2024 16:20:33 JST Birdulon @sun I bought a bridge camera after naively listening to fedi users and subsequently returned it (thanks Amazon!) after it became apparent that it couldn't compare to my 5yo smartphone that cost roughly twice as much back then. Never taking advice from people who claim $20 compact cameras can do better and then turn around and complain that you didn't shell out for a mirrorless and glass collection when you start comparing photos to a midrange smartphone. -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Monday, 14-Oct-2024 23:45:22 JST Birdulon @realman543 @meowski I don't think I'd call it that since you (can) still own the hardware, they're just tightening the screws on how you interact with their cellular networks. The eSIM itself is purely software. -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Monday, 14-Oct-2024 23:42:11 JST Birdulon @realman543 @meowski In theory an eSIM is like a SIM card but more convenient.
In practice an eSIM is like a SIM card but far less convenient.
You have to beg your carrier to give you a code to move your eSIM to another device every time (many prepaids won't even allow this) instead of just moving a physical card between phones whenever you want. It requires an internet connection to download and activate. You have limited slots and can only delete old ones, not temporarily disable them, so if you want to use a different one and then get your old one back, refer back to "you have to beg your carrier for every transfer".
>you got a dual sim phone and both sim "slots" are carrier locked?
Two eSIM slots and neither should be carrier locked. The threads they linked give the impression that a software update accidentally (teehee) broke eSIM downloading which I guess is functionally identical to an OTA update carrier-locking your phone from new activations. I still have my Kogan eSIM on it from Australia in slot 1 and it appears to still function besides not having any roaming plan for sending texts or sending/receiving calls or data (can receive texts and probably make emergency calls).
The whole eSIM thing is like some retro-futurism garbage where the only way they can imagine things working is how they already work - it has a separate IMEI for each of the two eSIM "slots". Everything is made obtuse in the name of security but it's probably just as vulnerable to the SIM cloning attacks as physical cards, without the convenience of being able to swap them around freely.
VoIP was basically a solved problem before they ever dreamed of VoLTE, LTE being a pure data network was a solid idea, they just had to ruin everything by doing their own (wrong) thing again and calling it an optimisation. I hate telcos I hate telcos I hate telcos I hate telcos(...) -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Monday, 14-Oct-2024 19:53:44 JST Birdulon @deprecated_ii The other day I went to McDonalds (Japan) and compared prices to current Australian ones. The meal total was like AU$5.50 vs AU$15 and the burger alone AU$2 vs AU$10.
>but asian burgers are small
So are australian ones these days :blobpensive:
(I totally get it with fast food though, wildly different labor markets are a big part of the price compared to other products) -
