@hakui @sun Same tbh. Love you guys even though I disagree with you on many, many things, but I think it's time for me to logout for a while again. -

@sun @arcana @lain >detecting adblockers was a violation of EU privacy laws
I already said I support the petition, you don't have to keep selling me on it -

@sun @kura I should clarify, the leaked server binaries absolutely were the mess of "works on my machine" that any reasonably cynical dev expected. And yet. -

@sun @kura It's difficult because the well has been poisoned by maliciously bad points, making an inherently unsympathetic position even more unsympathetic. -

@sun @kura My favourite excuse is "it would be too hard for people to run anyway, it's ten services split across big iron with esoteric hardcoded environment requirements." Meanwhile, when Genshin Impact server binaries got leaked, people managed to get things self-hostable very very quickly despite missing critical db things that weren't included in the leaks. -

@SuperDicq @hj @Jain @rick @sun I think that's a fair lower bound. The other day I saw someone complaining that FOSS devs are too selfish and focused on their own needs, and that they shouldn't release it in the first place if they aren't going to put hypothetical potential users first; I think we're better off having it than not having it. -

@hj @rick @Jain @SuperDicq @sun "iPhone Mini didn't sell, there's no market for a true midrange phone the size of a Galaxy S II"
"it sold more than your flagship and there's zero competition in the market for that form factor"
"commercial failure" -

@Jain @rick @SuperDicq @sun >Louis Rossman has never done something out of conviction, everything he did, benefited him money in the end. As an example, the whole right to repair movement is great, altho he pushed that not for the reason that private people do have more rights, he pushed it because its his business to do so.
This is a funny natural consequence of him being self-effacing. He's willing to call his motivations and convictions self-interest, so self-righteous people judge him by their own standards and say he must be a real piece of work. Much like people who always play up their skills will assume someone who plays them down is actually playing them up as well, and we all know how well that works in hiring processes. -

@nemesis @vriska @sun @mischievoustomato We are probably closer to discovering whatever markers it is detecting than we would have been without developing the AI -

@sun @nemesis @vriska @mischievoustomato I like that that implies there were correlations we didn't know to look for, and also that we probably still don't know what to look for because of how black box the resulting model is. -

@lain that's what we'll be stuck with for the time being, hopefully it's better than the previous status quo -

@lain >Physicians were explicitly instructed not to use external resources, including search engines (e.g., Google, Bing), language models (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, etc), or other online sources of medical information. They were blinded to the correctness of their diagnosis, and were asked to complete as many as possible during the study period.
Now I'm interested to see what they'd get with search engines allowed, since that's the real baseline. -

@SuperDicq @piggo @Suiseiseki @RedTechEngineer @lina @phnt @BionicNigga @sun @p @vokainen099 @foxido @mischievoustomato Don't worry so much about the language, worry more about the Android APIs. Even experienced Java devs had to learn a fair bit of specific knowledge to transition to making Android apps, being able to just webdev PWAs or whatever sounds amazingly low friction in theory. -

@Suiseiseki @p @SuperDicq @piggo @sun @foxido @lina Which part specifically are you talking about, because skimming the start is just talking about the views into the big framebuffer and I'm sleepy -

@p @SuperDicq @piggo @sun @foxido @lina RISC-V has benefited from years of popular ARM usage fixing up needlessly unportable code.
>Combinatorial complexity.
On builds yes, on codebases not really. Media players supporting ALSA+OSS+Pulse+Jack backends didn't have to care about how that interacted with the other configs for the most part. Even then, plugins can tame the number of builds to package.
>TOP500 and OpenMPI and Plan 9 and whatever else: these represent large qualitative shifts. "Wayland? Well, let me tell you: the compositor is built in! NO TEARING!" It's not impressive, it's sure as hell not worth disrupting things that already work.
Correct, it's not impressive, it's the bare minimum. Treating a multimonitor setup as one big framebuffer synchronized to one monitor is below the bare minimum.
I won't claim to never be interested in computers I don't have, but I definitely care more about the ones in front of me than supercomputers I will never interact with. -

@p @SuperDicq @piggo @sun @foxido @lina >Except that you have just written a justification for "forcing cooperation".
I'm not advocating for restricting the computing choices of users, I'm advocating for upstream dependencies to support wider protocols and configurations.
>It's also why you can't grab a copy of OSX and run it on a dinky RISC-V SOM that you bought from some shifty manufacturer in Shenzhen for $10.
I care about this which is why I would bitch about projects needlessly refusing to accept PRs for building for RISC-V.
