    • Deno

I had not realized that @deno_land started shipping aarch64 binaries of #Deno. https://github.com/denoland/deno/pull/22298

That means it's time for me to work on shipping arm64 binaries of #Dropserver!

That means Dropserver will be installable on #raspberrypi and all the other micro PCs 🎉

    • Mayank

I watched this video (shared by @mayank on the currently broken 🦋 site) because "Build things because you can" is such a good attitude.

    https://youtu.be/FcQ1pBgfKvo?si=KhAUaoKA44emklEv&t=236

But at 3:56 they start talking about the complexity of hosting simple web projects. Jake has a project of a little box they can have at home to host simple things with minimal effort and less worries, and wow there is a lot of overlap there with https://dropserver.org

@mayank Are you a regular Linux user? Because if not I can definitely see it as daunting. It's one reason I want to make Dropserver installable on Mac and eventually Windows, ideally with a GUI only and no config file. Being forced to use an unfamiliar OS to do an unfamiliar thing is just double the pain.

Regarding Deno it should run on a 64 bit Pi. They have builds now as of earlier this year:

@scottjenson I picked FOSS for designers because I think I've seen several "Design for engineers" type of courses/books/whatever in the past. Go for the thing that hasn't been tackled yet to make the biggest difference.

    • Tailscale

I tried setting up ionscale (https://jsiebens.github.io/ionscale/) an open source implementation of @tailscale's backend, but I got bogged down in lack of docs and panics (https://github.com/jsiebens/ionscale/issues/63)

It's a real bummer when good well-meaning #FOSS projects do so little with docs that the value of the code is locked away, unusable to anybody who doesn't have a ton of time on their hands to figure it out.

@fabrice @10leej @ironicbadger That's helpful, thank you. So that's GrayJay, and they explain the reason for that license (though I agree with the post that Trademark would be a better tool here.)

All the other FUTO projects I looked at are properly Open Source. Immich will stay Open Source (according to their blog post).

An #RSS reader is just another inbox with an ever-incrementing unread count. This solution by @sarajw is a nice way to get around that:

@aral Good to know about LocalXpose! Did any others come close to being suitable? I also need to find a solution to this, and ngrok pricing is just not workable. Thanks.

@stefan @atomicpoet That's gonna have to be a beefy server given the large number of gov officials and the number of followers and interactions they get.

@hongminhee I'm quite surprised by these results and some of the comments. Personally I've found Deno to be very pleasant and easy to get into compared to Node. But hey that's just me.

Still, not a bad idea to make the library capable of running on all JS runtimes. It's the wold we live in.

#TLS in a private home network: is there anything being worked on to make this easier? The options seem to be:

    - get a valid cert using a purchased domain name and use it internally
    - become your own root CA and install root certs on each device

Both have significant downsides. But if you do neither you don't get that sweet sweet HTTPS that is needed for so many web features (webcam access, PWA, etc..)

Is any work being done to help improve this situation?

    Do people still use #FTP?

I can't remember the last time I transferred a file over that protocol. You?

In theory open protocols allow "permissionless innovation".

But here on #Mastodon, built on open protocol #ActivityPub, you do need permission to innovate -- from the community.

I find this fascinating. It shows that the theory is just a theory and in reality there are other layers at play.

Similar dynamic happens with FOSS licenses. Lots of talk about copyleft versus liberal as if that's all that needs to be talked about. But other layers exist: legal (trademarks) and community (again).

@tk OStatus seems to be a handful of standards that work together to create a social media like experience (with replies, likes, etc..)

I'm imagining something that is deliberately *not* like that.

It's more like social sharing and discovery for people who don't do social media.

Come to think of it, can you use #RSS to syndicate other people's posts? Like could I create an RSS feed called "articles about breakfast" and put in there all the articles about breakfast that I find? Kind of like a Forward or Retweet / Boost but for rss?

    (I'm asking but I can't imaging RSS doesn't support that use-case?)

It could become a way for blog posts to get reach without resorting to the messiness of social media/migroblog intermediary.
