    i don't really know much about x264 since i avoid proprietary patent encumbered formats. basically all the videos on my puter are theora, vp8, vp9, av1, or ffv1.

    AV2 is out now and shrinks to about 70% of AV1 at the same quality. though decoders aren't really out yet in really any software other than VLC's dev builds and the reference encoder is slow as molasses still.

    btw, theres three AV1 software encoders in ffmpeg typically. libaom-av1 has the best quality per bit and is the most configurable and flexible. libsvtav1 is a huge RAM hog and trades off some quality, but is super fast and scales with many cores. theres also librav1e which sole claim to fame is being partially written in rust, it's worse than both of the prior, besides supporting some extra typically unused features svt excludes.
