If you sell advertising and an official opt out to the advertising you are telling potential advertisers that the most desirable audience segment is not accessible to them. This devalues the remaining inventory and creates a death spiral where the publication loses money because its pricing power for ad inventory is dissipating faster than it can be replaced by paying subscriptions not subsidized by ads.

A bunch of tech executives using the murder of a tech executive as an excuse to defame the poor and unhoused only to discover that the murderer is a tech executive feels like a metaphor for modern politics.
