@jbr because it destroys the business model. If you sell advertising and an official opt out to the advertising you are telling potential advertisers that the most desirable audience segment is not accessible to them. This devalues the remaining inventory and creates a death spiral where the publication loses money because its pricing power for ad inventory is dissipating faster than it can be replaced by paying subscriptions not subsidized by ads.

jbr (jbr@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 04-Sep-2023 02:23:22 JST jbr How do newspapers not have an ad free subscription tier? I have never clicked on an ad on the WaPo, but I’d happily pay a margin over whatever cpm they’re getting by showing me low quality ads. How is that not an option?
