when i was a sysadmin at a large ISP. our most reliable mail server monitor was just a window with a "tail -f" of the mail log. if it ever stopped scrolling rapidly, there was a problem.
had a friend who was a sysadmin at DEC. his voicemail was always full and the greeting was:
"i know my voicemail is full. i don't check it. if you need me to do something, send me email. if the reason you're calling is because email isn't working, i already know about it and am working on it."
feeding kids should not be a controversial thing but it has become that.
i'm very happy that the two CO state ballot initiatives in 2025 to fund meal programs after federal cuts endangered them passed. two of the easiest things for me to vote yes for.
sadly, not surprising that a federal "law enforcement" type kicked a puppy. the head of DHS shot her own puppy dead. DOJ/DHS need a massive culling and clean out.
i've been quite impressed with what folks in MSP folks have done to protect their community and neighbors. other occupied cities should be taking note.
my dad was a PhD, then professor. one of the life lessons he also shared with me, one time when i was burned out, was "you must survive". it's good to have goals, work hard, accomplish things, have career success, but the bottom line is, "you must survive". it's certainly informed my mentoring over the years, as well as kept me from ever burning out that badly again.
the new @mozilla CEO obviously has zero understanding of their users or the original mozilla mission. forcing users to take ads, forcing AI (that no users have been clamouring for) shows a real gap.
pity they didn't get someone who actually values open source and the mozilla history. just another sales critter hoping for the "glamor" of CEO title, i guess.
