i'd also be concerned about uber/lyft lowering your "rating" as a passenger, making those services mostly unusable.

uber/lyft are far more likely to care about not pissing off TFG/muskrat than they are passenger safety, at least while they can get insurance and avoid criminal prosecution.

i'm with you but as i said, not everyone can control this completely. in some towns, teslas are also a large proportion of the rides.

since we don't always have a choice about uber/lyft, everyone should know how to get out. as you'd expect from the complete lack of concern about safety, every model seems to be different:

we found a local butcher that does locally sourced meats and does a variety of sausages. one option was boudin, so we're doing cajun shrimp with cheesy grits and boudin sausage for dinner.

if we don't make it, please tell our cardiologist that we went really, really happy.

ICE is already doing the "work or don't eat" *choice* with detainees.

slavery is still the key economic driver of far too many industries. they have all sorts of names for it but exploited labor is what it is.

at one point in my career when i was consulting, i used to charge $100/hr but had two additional fees:

    - $25/hour if you made me wear a tie
    - $25/hour including travel if you made me to to TX

at this point, you couldn't pay me enough to go to TX for biz.

saw recently that crows and magpies are using these anti-bird strips to build nests. i like the idea of building something you need by tearing apart the things that oppress and obstruct you.

basic DNS is easy. the edge cases will turn your hair white.

but designing robust DNS isn't hard if you are careful and it's pretty bomb proof compared to all sorts of other IETF/IEEE protocols.

i'm old and tired. i always try for prudent and robust.

yeah... as already mentioned in this thread, all sorts of things could have ganged agley, inadvertant or deliberate. considering the deranged chaos monkeys with chainsaws known as DOGE poking into everything, not inconceivable it could be either deliberate or oopsie...

it's been getting progressively worse for a while (last 2 OS versions) but yes, finder just wedges. finder. all sorts of other stuff more and more fragile.

i used to be able to have my desktop go a month or longer between reboots. now it's at least once a week and sometimes needs a hardware forced cold boot because it can't even just reboot.

i've been using macs since the mac +. not happy with how things have gone.

we are rolling back centuries of science and medicine.

you only have to go back 120 years. walk into any cemetary, look at the number of kids 6 yrs old or younger who died. we've only licked all sorts of things that killed so many children in the last 40-50 years.

the same loonies that wail about replacement theory, critical shortages of children, abortions, yet are pushing things that killed so many kids.

    i am aghast...

i can't think of a more apt gift than a golden pager to highlight two leaders stuck in previous era, obsessed with money/status, and unconcerned with actually communicating with anyone.

CA definitely isn't perfect or cheap. but it is also very much at the leading edge of actually trying to care about people.

lots of things, like cheaper insulin, auto exhaust standards, n95 masks, one of the first US privacy policies (CPAA), etc.
