@Raccoon@techhub.social my concern is that they have a bunch of vague promises about shaping the fediverse and its future without explicitly stating their intentions. If they listed flaws in fedi, different things like the lack of moderation tooling, legal resources and other stuff that I constantly complain about I might have been more open. I’m not entirely sure though considering that automattic is part of it… I’m not about to let automattic kick me out of my new home on the internet after they did it twice on tumblr.

Look at projects such as OpenZFS, OpenIndiana (part of OpenSolaris/https://www.illumos.org/). Although in those cases Oracle changed the licensing agreement it still applies. I mean, I am sure the people that took on OpenJDK were overwhelmed at first but nowadays it's the only thing I use. I cannot remember the last time I used Oracle's JDK, sure I've used hotspot which is oracle's JVM but that was part of an openjdk build. It has been years since I have used oracle java.

Xfree86 was starting to get a bit too greedy, closing off development to a core team. The core team left and made their own thing. You don't need Mozilla employees to leave for this to be accomplished though. Look at teams such as Servo which https://www.zdnet.com/article/mozilla-lays-off-250-employees-while-it-refocuses-on-commercial-products/ were cut off by Mozilla's greed. There are plenty of people who have been hurt by Mozilla in the same way that there were plenty of "disgruntled" (they were rightfully upset at Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems) Oracle employees who moved on to work in community led projects. I think there just needs to be a strong enough community fork with goals and some progress, other people will follow.
