You can’t just look up something in an encyclopedia and copy the text word for word in your book report/essay/whatever. In highschool we learned you can but only if you give proper credit (aka citations)… now we have built something that plagiarizes from the internet in bulk without giving credit… I do not see how this is going to work long term. It’s like using images you found on google search as stock images on your website. Sure, if not very many people look at your site you can mostly fly under the radar… but all it takes is just one person at the wrong time and now you’re getting cease and desist.

Things move slowww in the regulatory world. Look, I’m sure it doesn’t matter for things like scripts (I am going to ignore the horrific image that invokes of someone asking chatgpt to write posix sh and then executing that as root) but if your business logic relies on code that was plagiarized? Yeah you might be in some deep shit. The WINE project does clean room stuff, when the XP source code was leaked it was important that anyone contributing to WINE directly did not see it in order to avoid potential copyright infringement as it would risk the entire project. So yeah, no I think that this is going to blow up in everyone’s faces. The one thing I can’t seem to figure out though, who do y’all think is going to be the next Oracle (as in the overly litigious asshole that makes everyone shake in fear) this time around?

Aight merging woem.men following now. We will have to wait until kitsunes.club is up for follower migration & exporting follows... I've been waiting because I didn't want a rug pull to be possible once I got my 1,400+ followers back on my account. The instance is under my control (on hardware I control) so no more worries about that... time to re-establish my clips and other things I had on my old account as well.

@Linux@kitty.social Imagine spending even more to get the instance back and to clear the debt. I didn't do that thank god, but my friends definitely came in to help me out.

@Linux@kitty.social I personally donated USD$800 towards our hardware donation fund. I felt bad asking for so much, and I wanted to show that I was also going to be giving money towards it instead of what people usually do which is ask for money (without even adding some of theirs to the pot). So, I feel you.

@Linux@kitty.social I'm upset at it as well, unfortunately we were not in a position to leverage it. In my opinion there's more pressing issues for Amelia, such as the fact that she had a big GDPR mess. For starters, she nuked the privacy policy we had before without prior notice (I believe it's a 30 day notice? I don't remember if GDPR is the one that requires it but I do know there's a reason it's standard throughout the industry). Unfortunately, due to how little the assets were valued (I mean, in the grand scheme of things ~2k euro is a small amount) I have concerns that any sort of action to try to get them back may lead to more financial drain. I also don't really know what would happen in that case, say we did go through the proceedings... Would we get the hardware back? would we get the money spent on the hardware back? If we got the hardware back there's not much use in it apart from liquidating it and trying to disperse the amount gained from liquidation (which is not going to be the same amount put in)...

A nightmare to sort through which is why I'm just letting it be, personally I just want her to leave me alone especially because I am hurt by her decisions leading up to the event. I am thankful that I have the instance. The reason the instance mattered a lot to me because I had spent the previous 6 months making it a community with people I enjoy talking to, it felt personal again and I relived my tumblr trauma of being terminated. It was awful when I had no control and had to watch in horror as the entire instance was at the mercy of her who was clearly not in the right state of mind to be making large decisions. I think it'd be better to just drop it - as much as I'd like to get something back I don't feel comfortable with hurting her even worse. She is clearly struggling in life and without the support she desperately needs. I don't think her parents are very supportive of her, and she has been forced to basically figure things out on her own. It sucks that all of this happened, believe me I am furious but at this point in time I care more about rebuilding what was lost instead of going after the person who lit everything on fire.

Hello local instance users, and wider fedi. I have created a guide to ease everyone when it comes to account migrations. I hope this will help some people who are having difficulty with the process. If anyone has any issues please feel free to reach out to me, or if anyone has anything to add (whether that's something like clips can be imported or potential incompatibilities) please let me know. I wrote this up pretty quickly (it took a bit I lied) and it's currently residing under a misskey page. I am hoping in the future to move this over to a static page under transfem.org, but for the time being the page will make do.
