@mcc@mastodon.social of course i find out about this view the day they're shutting down, i probably would've used the site a lot more if i knew about this.
so true honestly I fucking hate modern app notifications. what happened to keeping notifs to a minimum I feel like every new app I download I have to just disable notifications for out of the box.
@evan@cosocial.ca@stefan@stefanbohacek.online@wendinoakland@beige.party To come back to this, defederations are not defined by the standard. There's no standard behavior for what should be done when an instance defederates from another. Mastodon severs all the following/follower relations during a defed, misskey (and sharkey forks) do not, allowing for defederations to be reversible. It'd be nice to sit down and come up with what a defederation looks like and how it should be implemented. Personally I don't think that all defeds should sever the connection (so perhaps defining "Soft defed" would be a useful thing to do in this case)
you know what would be a nice fep? actually standardizing reports to include things like an "assignee" if you want a specific administrator on the instance, categories (ie just an array of tags), along with multiple notes (that get transformed into local notes lol). im sick of seeing horrible inconsistent reports from a variety of software. from just seeing[
"link_to_user",
"link_to_offending_content"
] to Note: link_to_remote_instance_copy
Local Note: link_to_local_note
------
report reason to just [
"link_to_user"
] like please for the love of god
forwarded reports feel like one of the most unpolished portions of this entire network and that's saying a lot. there's not a standardized way, there's not a special cool format that i could include additional attributes such as tags, assigned user etc. it's just a bunch of random shit sent by the remote instance actor. the actor format isn't even standard, i'll get @mastodon.social, @instance.actor all sorts of various accounts and it's like why can't you just include a category for hostname lol? why the fuck is it like this... i get using the instance actor to proxy reporters so that you don't have retaliation (it makes sense for it to be anonymous like that) but for the love of god lol
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online@evan@cosocial.ca@wendinoakland@beige.party Meta by itself is not a significant enough threat, but the fact is that Mastodon is also in this foundation. These are some pretty big names with a large amount of funding and influence on the web. I am fearful that their influence will sway the conversations on what fedi needs overall. If we go to one of their missions https://socialwebfoundation.org/long-form-text-on-the-fediverse/ this is a pretty low priority in my opinion. for this project, the Social Web Foundation will convene implementers and other stakeholders for a long-form text workshop to discuss data structures, interactions, and page formats. What does that mean? Are they going to go around asking instance software developers about this? Are they going to ask themselves about this? Why are we focusing on this when we have other issues to worry about. I am worried about the implication that these underlying issues will be drowned out with features that are niceties at best, and unwanted at worst. I've seen how tumblr was so successful at building a facade over their decaying infrastructure. How https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/meta-fined-102-million-for-storing-passwords-in-plain-text-110049679.html meta was storing things in plaintext pretending everything was okay. I don't want issues like forwarded reports to be swept under the rug and not given proper attention because the people up top are more focused on making it a content distribution platform for stakeholders.
fedi brainrot infected me every time i hear someone irl saying "i am feeling a bit woozy" i immediately think of :woozy_baa: :woozycat: :woozy_box: and everything else
@Raccoon@techhub.social WHY PRIVATE MESSAGING OMG. That's fucking awful. Nobody needs E2EE haphazardly slapped on the protocol for a false sense of security with private messaging. You want encrypted private messaging? Go to literally any other platform fedi is not the place for that. I am actually pissed, there's no way in hell that I would want to administrate something like that. I have seen countless examples of Matrix home servers going wrong within this community due to a lack of moderation tooling. We're not talking just a couple racists we're talking about child sex trafficking, csam distribution... Ugh. That pisses me the fuck off. Rich text posts are a nicety to have, I'd really like for things to adopt markdown and not mfm (fuck mfm imo it's okay but it's not a markdown and it's definitely not something that's viable long term. it's a gimmick). I guess I missed their "mission" page. Now I'm even more furious, because none of this is going to help the fediverse be widely adopted.
We are at a turning point. Running an instance is a lot of fucking work, we lack moderation tooling (yes, every software currently out there has some sort of flaw when it comes to mod tools. Akkoma has some bulk moderation tooling but is also lacking in other areas). The last fucking thing we need is encrypted dms to be used as a tool for harassment. We already suffer enough with how you can't disable replies in a post. It is awful that this is used as a vector for harassment in combination with setting visibility to restricted modes (such as follower only, so that only the original author can see the bigoted comment and the fanbase of the bigot can also jump in). What the fuck were they thinking? This is some actual shit. Fuck .
