I once organized a panel session at FOSDEM that included a couple of famous FOSS personalities and a some MEPs. I found one of the MEPs waiting outside the building, confused: "Usually when I go somewhere, there's a reception set up."

I was like "yeah well, not here. C'mon in, I'll sort you out."

To their credit, the MEP shrugged it off, and went into the panel discussion like the pro they were.

@TeamMidwest Yes! The power grid is one of the most underrated things out there, along with water infrastructure.

We tend to assume that water comes out of the tap, and that the lights come on when we flip a switch. We ignore that these things are actually fairly close to magic.

@Sustainable2050 I think it's time we all recognized that the purpose of nuclear power plants isn't to generate energy.

Their purpose is to build and retain in-country skills, knowledge and means for building nuclear weapons.

Seen in that light, the seemingly irrational expenditures start to make sense.

@ShaulaEvans @ifixcoinops After our second normal toaster in 4 years or so broke down, we decided to spend a bit more on a more durable model.

For consumer-grade toasters, pricing is mostly based on design. Not what we were looking for. Also, we have four kids, some of whom are very hungry indeed.

So we went looking for restaurant-/hotel grade toasters. This was on the cheap end; but it seems solid enough. Certainly toasts fine.

@zucker @hannsr Jup, die TK ist allgemein technisch ganz gut aufgestellt.

So 1-2 mal im Jahr rufe ich zusätzlich aus irgendeinem Grund den Telefonservice an. Die waren bisher immer freundlich und kompetent.
