I'm actually quite upset as I learned through this article that Scott Campbell, Winnipeg Jets captain from 1980/81 had passed in 2022. For a while Scott and I talked via Twitter almost every day, along with a small tight knit group that had advocated for the return of the team. I lost touch when I migrated away from Twitter. Damn you Elon. His mother drops the puck tomorrow night and I'll be watching with fond memories of Scott. :JetsRetro: https://illegalcurve.com/legacy-of-late-winnipeg-jets-captain-lives-on-through-current-captains-charity-effort/
Dressing up in a frog costume has to be the brightest stroke of genius I've seen to combat fascism on the ground. When you're dressed in black with a gas mask on, and shouting angry slogans, the perception is you're an enemy combatant thus making the use of force more palpable. When you use force against a hilarious frog costume it looks like what it is, a brutally violent over reaction.
@Nonilex At some point somebodies going to call a sympathetic police dept in a blue city and you're going to see a stand off between federals and local cops. All it takes is a hair trigger and you'll be embarking on an armed constitutional crisis.
The fediverse is the last safe information harbour on the Internet.
Twitter, Facebook, Tick/Tock, etc all promote enragement for engagement which is the bedrock of today's authoritarianism.
If you're on BlueSky you've already seen how the new boss is same as the old boss when it comes to centralized control and censorship. There's also questions around where the moneys coming from. They may already be soft captured.
Today more than ever the world needs decentralized social media.
Under the law you basically can't exist without money. In cities you can't loiter or sleep in parks. In the bush you can't permanently camp on crown land. So if society won't allow you to exist without money and it believes you have the right to exist, society should give you a basic amount of money to exist.
🟢 Tip for Mastodon newbs: If you want a lively feed, be a follow back person. My criteria for NOT following back are extremely narrow. My default response to a follow is to follow back. You're not gaming any algorithms here or gaining any cred with your ratio.
The BlueSky (and by extension AT proto) vs. Mastodon (and by extension Activity Pub proto) debate is starting to get boring. It's simple, one is a commercial product and the other is not. Each has its shortcomings and advantages. If an important differentiator for you are the motives of each projects stewards then you have a fairly clear choice.
@jaz This 100% "The fediverse is not a place, it is the means to build a place."
I've often said one day Mastodon and the greater fediverse will be like Linux. Your grandmother never heard of Linux but her smart TV runs on it. You will belong to a great micro-blogging site that just happens to run on Mastodon.
Another great talk from my friend @chris on his journey in setting up https://socialbc.ca/explore. In this slide he asks the very valid question of: Are we in a Kubrick movie? #Fedicon
@tchambers Block lists are far to easily weaponized and its an even bigger threat in the fediverse. If I'm going to subscribe to a block list I want clear criteria on who gets added to the list and why. I also want a clear appeal process. The decision to block a domain should be up to the instance admin with accountability to the members of the instance.
I have never heard of a person with a more encyclopedic knowledge of the game of hockey than Bob Mckenzie. The "Bob father" has decided to retire today. I don't usually link to Twitter but I'll make one exception today: https://x.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/status/1940148015488278976#HNOM
@tchambers@mastodonmigration@laurenshof@cheeaun@rolle@scottjenson@zeldman Mastodon was always sold to the end user as the community when its actually just the software that can run a community. The term join Mastodon is fundamentally flawed, it's like saying join the world wide web instead of saying go to my web site. The emphasis should be building great communities that just happen to interooerate with each other. That shift in perception addressees a few of the great sins (def not all)
The shooting in Minnesota has so many disturbing elements. First and foremost it's a targeted political assassination that gives republicans the balance of power in a state legislature. Second it was brazen and cold blooded meant exactly to send a message. That message being if you're in a position of power and in opposition to the right you could be assassinated.
