@tchambers I'm just spitballin but I wonder it you could run a low bandwidth analog mesh network over cell phones. Bring back the old modem protocols have a virtualized Hayes modem or something like that. Just dumping malformed ideas lol.
@tchambers You need a store and forward network like fidonet used to be. Combine that with something like winlink over shortwave. Or of course starlink works as well.
Again for the benifit of the new people here's the thing with the fediverse, you're going to have to put in a little more work to curate your experience. However the payoff is that you're going to get much better, more authentic engagement from real people. I've had a presence on all the platforms and this where I hang out exclusively. Bottom line it is what you make it. #forkiverse
Seems like new people are arriving via #forkiverse. My biggest Mastodon tip is follow everyone. Not just ha ha ha ya follow everyone, no I mean follow everyone you can. With no algorithm you need content for your feeds. You can always cutaway the accounts you don't like after the fact. You have way more safety tools here than on any other platform so follow en masse.
I saw someone comment smugly that radio ended up outlasting MTV. While technically correct I'm not sure the smugness was warranted as radio at least in my world has become almost completely irrelevant. The last time I tuned into the "rock" radio station they where still rotating the same old corporate playlist from the 90s.
It's an odd thing for me to head into a new year with little optimism. And I'm not referring to the macro world which is always burning in one way or another. There are dark storm clouds ahead for me personally and it's a terrifying thing to be on the edge of that storm and no there's no course around it. A younger me would've steeled myself but I just feel so old and used up. But there is no course around only through so steel myself I must.
One year the Riders and Bombers were facing each other. My cousin has a cabin at crooked lake Saskatchewan where he permanently flies a riders flag. My brother and law placed a bet with him that if my cousin lost he would have to fly a bomber flag for a day. My cousin lost and dutifully flew the bomber flag for exactly 24hrs. He then wrapped it in a large stone, motored it to the middle of the lake and disposed of it forever. 😅 #CFLOM
I'm actually quite upset as I learned through this article that Scott Campbell, Winnipeg Jets captain from 1980/81 had passed in 2022. For a while Scott and I talked via Twitter almost every day, along with a small tight knit group that had advocated for the return of the team. I lost touch when I migrated away from Twitter. Damn you Elon. His mother drops the puck tomorrow night and I'll be watching with fond memories of Scott. :JetsRetro: https://illegalcurve.com/legacy-of-late-winnipeg-jets-captain-lives-on-through-current-captains-charity-effort/
Dressing up in a frog costume has to be the brightest stroke of genius I've seen to combat fascism on the ground. When you're dressed in black with a gas mask on, and shouting angry slogans, the perception is you're an enemy combatant thus making the use of force more palpable. When you use force against a hilarious frog costume it looks like what it is, a brutally violent over reaction.
@Nonilex At some point somebodies going to call a sympathetic police dept in a blue city and you're going to see a stand off between federals and local cops. All it takes is a hair trigger and you'll be embarking on an armed constitutional crisis.
The fediverse is the last safe information harbour on the Internet.
Twitter, Facebook, Tick/Tock, etc all promote enragement for engagement which is the bedrock of today's authoritarianism.
If you're on BlueSky you've already seen how the new boss is same as the old boss when it comes to centralized control and censorship. There's also questions around where the moneys coming from. They may already be soft captured.
Today more than ever the world needs decentralized social media.
Under the law you basically can't exist without money. In cities you can't loiter or sleep in parks. In the bush you can't permanently camp on crown land. So if society won't allow you to exist without money and it believes you have the right to exist, society should give you a basic amount of money to exist.
🟢 Tip for Mastodon newbs: If you want a lively feed, be a follow back person. My criteria for NOT following back are extremely narrow. My default response to a follow is to follow back. You're not gaming any algorithms here or gaining any cred with your ratio.
The BlueSky (and by extension AT proto) vs. Mastodon (and by extension Activity Pub proto) debate is starting to get boring. It's simple, one is a commercial product and the other is not. Each has its shortcomings and advantages. If an important differentiator for you are the motives of each projects stewards then you have a fairly clear choice.
@jaz This 100% "The fediverse is not a place, it is the means to build a place."
I've often said one day Mastodon and the greater fediverse will be like Linux. Your grandmother never heard of Linux but her smart TV runs on it. You will belong to a great micro-blogging site that just happens to run on Mastodon.
