@charlotteclymer was one of the people I thought I would miss when I left Xitter - fortunately, it didn't have to come to that. I'm glad that she is with us here in the Fediverse 💛
"DOGE is wildly unpopular with the American electorate – even large pluralities of Republicans think its stupid. Campaigning on cutting fraud and profiteering would be a wildly popular way for Democrats to separate themselves from Republicans. Few Democrats are rising to the occasion, though." - @pluralistic
One wonders why & if it has anything to do with the fact that among Dems, too, most politicians are multi-millionaires whose interests don't align with yours...
TL;DR: Having criminals in charge doesn't mean crime becomes legal - the laws are still enforced, unless you're willing & able to stuff the BRIBE ME! jar at the door to the White House...
@aral@dalias@fredb@martin Yeah, really. Like, I had an argument with a friend *who is a statistician* & still refused to believe that there is no reasoning going on or understanding emerging in an LLM - simply because it looks so convincing.
Pretty sure most of it is the "Mentalist Effect"; I mean, despite this having been debunked since fucking Houdini, look at how many people still believe that shit is real...
In Denmark not so long ago we had a right-wing extremist named Rasmus Paludan running, who for a while nearly dominated political coverage & was almost elected for the Danish Parliament - until he was deplatformed from his primary channel, Youtube, for hate speech, at which point he virtually disappeared from the public eye & hasn't been able to stage a comeback since.
Acting against #propaganda channels is a matter of democracy.
@lps@BeAware Yes, that's my account over on Makertube - but if I view that same account through #Mastodon (by clicking the account name on the post as it appears in my feed), it shows a weird selection of videos 🤔 there's the most recent one, then it skips to "Derailleur", then all the way back to "Power Blocker", making it look like I'm posting months apart instead of weeks. Seems misleading to a user trying to find out if I'm worth following...
The #federation plot thickens: I just posted this video to my #peertube, which I follow with my #Mastodon account - and as I would expect it shows up in my Masto feed, so so far, so good... but if I then click on my PT account within Mastodon it doesn't show me all the videos I've posted on PT 🤔 like, it skips the one I posted last week, for example.
Is there some setting I'm missing over on PT, or what's going on here...?
Nope, still not clear on this, help me out here: Having boosted this post with my #pixelfed account, which I follow from my #mastodon account, does that mean people following me on Mastodon can now see it in their Followed feed?
Do people on my server see it in their Local feed?
- or do I just see it in my own Mastodon feed for some reason?
SO MY FUCKING PHONE WON'T LET ME KNOW THAT I'VE MISSED A CALL BUT "WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRY GEMINI?" POPS UP (what feels like) EVERY FIVE MOTHERFUCKING MINUTES 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Goddamn, I so viscerally goddamn fucking hate technology with the fire of a billion angry suns. If I believed in a deity I would pray I live to see the end of this & some proper fucking tech.
My phone is under the sofa right now. I think. I threw it & it disappeared.
"Rather than having a democratically accountable state that sets wages and prices based on need and ability, price discrimination gives this authority to large firms with pricing power, no regulatory constraints, and unlimited access to surveillance data. You couldn't ask for a neater example of the maxim that "What matters isn't what technology does. What matters is who it does it for; and who it does it to."..." - @pluralistic
@dalias@eff Also, your post was wildly questionable even before the recent changes. You *do* know that absolutely nothing Meta (or any corporate SoMe platform) does can be remotely presumed to be in good faith, right? The evidence for this goes literally all the way back to their founding.
"- the most exciting part of the "internet in the '90s" was that it had incredibly low barriers to entry and wasn't dominated by large companies – indeed, it had them running scared.
The AI bubble, by contrast, is being inflated by massive incumbents, whose excitement boils down to "This will let the biggest companies get much, much bigger and the rest of you can go fuck yourselves"..."
- and you know why it's also all men? Because not a single one of us has never been in the company of other men & let one or more of them get away with talking or acting like a misogynist creep.
Not a single one of us.
And no, Hero McLanternjaw, this is not about DeFeNDiNg WoMEn - you're not in a movie. This is about inventing a baseline of manliness where the social cost of being a fucking creep is insurmountable.
@atomicpoet@j12t I don't even think it will work short-term. People are already bouncing because what they came for, the social connections, is nothing but an afterthought at this point - the only ones trying to make it work are influencers & companies who still believe in SoMe marketing. We're probably months from FB being just bots talking to other bots & Meta pretending that's still worth spending your advertising budget on.
Can I just say that us cis folk need to start considering these kinds of hate & intolerance offensive, too & realize the harm & danger they represent. It's about EVERYONE's right to be who they are without being persecuted or discriminated against for it; if we don't stand in defense of that right, it can be taken from anyone of us.
Considering how many people seem to have read that "First they came for..." poem, this really shouldn't be that hard to understand.
