@evan congrats! Just a curiosity, is there a comparison with other protocols trying to create an interoperable web? I'm trying to understand why AT Protocol was created. I still need to read some references some people shared here.
Just a quick comparison between @Vivaldi and @mozilla Mastodon profiles.
Vivaldi vs Mozilla - 3000+ vs 87 posts - 21 vs 14 months old - ~ 21 thousand vs ~ 29 thousand followers
The last revenue of Mozilla that I found is of the order of USD 400+ million, while Vivaldi Technologies seems to have 10 to 100 times less on revenue. And Vivaldi browser has direct integration with Mastodon.
Quite intriguing.
Mozilla's instance was never a project. I think we can't even call it an experiment. At most a joke.
@mozilla I'm so glad I've never received an invite to Mozilla's instance and instead chose @Vivaldi, when I gave up running my own Mastodon server.
Since I have to use at work some apps that work better with Chrome based browsers, it was also near the moment I switched my main browser from Firefox to Vivaldi.
It surprises me how a small company can maintain a Mastodon server, while Mozilla Foundation cannot.
Is WordPress still the best alternative to blogging into the Fediverse, which also allows comments with activity pub compatible profiles?
I liked Writefreely, but there's no possibility of comments. And Ghost seems promising, but it's still in the development phase. I'd like just some clean interface, and that I can install on a little server.
Maybe folks in the #FediForum discussed other possibilities?
I remember when there was the first big wave coming from Twitter, around 2 years ago, there were some discussions about Flickr and Tumblr using the Activity Pub protocol. Did this idea die? If so, does anyone know why?
Why on earth are there still no Brazilian servers on https://joinmastodon.org/servers? Two years ago, when Twitter was bought by its current owner, I found it very strange, especially after seeing so many Mastodon servers run by Brazilian communities. And even now that we've had X blocked?
There's already this confusing stage of choosing a server, but why are Brazilians excluded? Lack of perspective beyond the global north? Lack of articulation to have Brazilian instances on this fucking list?
Was there any talk or discussion at the #FediForum about the banning of #X in #Brazil, and the massive migration of Brazilians to #BlueSky?
I've heard more than once today the question why Brazilians went to Bluesky. I've heard some ideas like Bluesky resembles Orkut, an old social network platform of Google that was very poorly in Brazil 20 years ago. I think that's false.
I don't have a clear answer to this phenomenon, but it would be very interesting to listen to what other people think.
@BeAware@askesis 14 years ago, the University of São Paulo tried to create its own social network platform, the Stoa project http://stoa.usp.br (it seems abandoned, they don't even have an SSL certificate).
Indeed, moderation was an issue. As an example, I had my blog and account deleted, because the rector ordered, and I was fired from the development team, due to a misunderstanding. I created a first April joke, that some people believed, and it even ended up in the news. 😂
Be the way, one of the goals of the project was to be federated and we aimed to connect to other educational and research institutes, using some protocol that allowed that.
Today I laugh, but there were some tough cases where some people were advocating violence, and our small team (4-5 developers) had to deal with it. I cannot image how it would be in case of a very active system in a university as big as University of São Paulo, that can have hundreds of thousands, if we allow the alumni to join? Or dozens of thousands, if not. You need a team dedicated to the moderation, which is not trivial.
I wonder why the hell someone decided to create a new protocol for another decentralized social network platform, instead of contributing to Activity Pub, that has been developed for years. Is there some technical reason or it was just the trend to reinvent the wheel, which is common to startups and founders?
I was lazy and didn't analyse how it works, but it seems not all posts appear in this bridge profile. I just checked in the previous link, and I cannot see several posts. It seems like just some malfunctioning workaround.
@tchambers@augustocc@fediforum one interesting thing to discuss could the resistance of Brazilian journalists and activists to join the fediverse, even now the X blew up for them. Here's just one example
@BeAware@wikimediafoundation the more voices in the open knowledge world, the better. The Wikimedia movement has great projects read by millions each year, so I think they have an important role here and it is very aligned with their values. In a decentralized world, we don't need one single leadership.
I'm glad there are great organizations like W3C working on that. The more, the merrier.
